Rashi's Birth
Paris (JTA) —
Distinguished Jews
gathered recently in Troyes,
in the Champagne region of
eastern France, to dedicate a
memorial to one of its most
famous sons, Rabbi Solomon
ben Isaac, known to history
as Rashi.
Rashi's prodigious com-
mentaries on the Bible and
the Talmud are at the core of
Jewish scholarship. The
950th anniversary of his bir-
th was celebrated Dec. 16 by
the unveiling of a memorial
sculpted by Raymond
Moretti.
Dignitaries attending in-
cluded the former French
Chief Rabbi Rene Sirat,
Nobel laureate Eli Wiesel
and Robert Galley, mayor of
Troyes. Sirat established the
Rashi European Center for
Hebraic Research in Troyes
in 1989.
Minister Deri
Files Libel Suit
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Interior
Minister Arye Deri has filed
a $500,000 libel suit against
the newspaper Yediot
Achronot and two of its
reporters last week, claim-
ing that information
published by the newspaper
was incorrect and could
cause him harm.
Mr. Deri has been the
target of a police investiga-
tion since May for alleged
misappropriation of funds
and possibly illegal real
estate dealings.
The investigation was
prompted by a series of ar-
ticles in Yediot Achronot by
Mordechai Gilat. Mr. Gilat
and his colleague, Mali
Kempner, were named in
the suit.
