Birmingham composer
Elaine Lebenbom has been
commissioned to write a piece
for the Detroit Woodwind
Quintet in honor of this year's
first ever First Night/Birm-
ingham New Year's Eve
celebration. _
The Quintet will give the
world premiere performances
of this piece, entitled First
Night during two concerts
that evening. A non-alcoholic
festival of the arts for the
whole family, First Night will
take place in downtown Bir-
mingham from 4 p.m. until
midnight. The Detroit Wood-
wind Quintet will perform in
the Christian Science Church
a 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. In addition
to the premiere of First Night,
whose movements are subtitl-
ed "Anticipation," "Reflec-
tion," and "Celebration," they
will perform works by Haydn,
Lefebre, Ibert and Scott
Joplin.
Members of the Detroit
Woodwind Quintet include
Deborah Scott Katz, flute;
Sylvia Starkman, oboe; Linda
Borushko, clarinet; Elizabeth
Wilson, bassoon; and
Ernestine Barnes, horn.

Stagecrafters will present
The Mystery of Edwin Drood,
a musical comedy by Rupert
Holmes, Jan. 18-Feb. 9.
Drood, the winner of the 1986
Tony Award for best musical,
is a music hall-style "play
within a play" where the au-
dience determines the out-
come at each performance.
This musical is based on the
last, unfinished novel of
Charles Dickens, featuring
comedy, song, dance, and
mystery!
Drood will be presented at
Stagecrafters' Baldwin
Theatre, 415 S. Lafayette,
Royal Oak. The theater is ful-
ly handicapped accessible.

Parks Bus Trip To
'Sesame Street'
West Bloomfield Parks and
Recreation will host a trip to
see "Sesame Street Live" Feb.
2 at the Fox Theatre.
The parks bus trip will in-
elude transportation and
main floor ticket. The bus
will leave from the parks and
recreation office on Mid-
dlebelt north of Long Lake
Road at 1 p.m. Cost for the
trip is $14 per person.
