IN ROBIN'S NEST SHOPPING CENTER L West Bloomfield 737-0160 54 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1990 J ant some good ad- vice on keeping trim? . . . Ask Mildred Pollack . . . she should know . . . Mildred will be 102 years old this Monday. "Be active. Be positive," says the Trowbridge senior citizen complex resident .. . "Keep your legs elevated when sitting," Mildred ad- vises. "Sit with a foot stool for leg elevation." . . . She uses a medical bed for elevating her legs at night. Mildred plays canasta twice a week from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and the players at her table say Mildred is quite outstanding . . . sharply remembering all the cards played. She loves opera . . . and would have become an opera singer, but marriage was Mildred's first choice over an operatic career . . . She was married 43 years . . . Her hus- band passed away 34 years ago. Annette Ross will have a special cake for Mildred as the Trowbridge residents celebrate her birthday on New Year's Eve. Congrats, Mildred . . . on number 102. Trowbridge, by the way, recently participated in the ARA Services nationwide project of sending thousands of cookies to the over 350,000 service people stationed in the Persian Gulf. Oatmeal, raisin and sugar cookies were provided by ARA Services to be baked by residents in their own kit- chens . . . Trowbridge-ites Mary Manczuk, Mary Speed -and Annette Ross baked 200 cookies each and Mark Draus and LaVonne Strada of the Trowbridge Food Services baked the balance of the 150 dozen cookies shipped . . . Popcorn was used as a cushion for additional items like suckers, gum, playing cards and magazines . . . In- stead of crumpling papers, they rolled current news- papers so the recipients could read them. Minna Stryk, a resident of Trowbridge about a year-and- a-half, made dozens of her own kosher almond cookies, which were included in the shipment. GET WELL wishes . . . to Larry Chassin . . . at Beau- mont Hospital. IT WAS LIKE the London Mildred Pollack: Keeping active. Chop House used to be years ago on a Saturday night .. . so crowded you had to walk sideways while slithering through. Amidst the famed Hy Vogel caricatures lining the beams, Michigan Cancer Foundation Circle of Fellows held its an- nual holiday party. Lorraine and Martin Blanck remembered when they were first married and got so many thrills just being at the London Chop House . . . This evening they sat in the Chop's noted number one booth and looked like they belonged there . . . June 29 will be 45 years for Lorraine and Marty . . . Ask them if 45 years ago they thought the two would one day be sitting in that booth and Lorraine and Marty would laugh in unison while saying, "No way!" So good to see Linda Houlihan again . . . back at the London Chop House as assistant manager with hus- band Chef Martin Houlihan . . . Dianne Wolok with Stu Gorelick telling of making a chocolate mousse cake and eating the whole thing herself . . . Wherever Dianne put it looks good. Dr. Herbert Bloom and wife Judge Alice Gilbert, Lois and Dr. Morris Lipnik, John Bloom (of course) . . . If people at MCF didn't know him, they'd ask for Joe Gerak's autograph . . . Sally's hus- band is a dead ringer for Paul "Crocodile Dundee" Hogan . . . Les and Miriam Colburn, Fred Yaffe, Bob and Maggie Allesee (he's the Bob Allison of radio and TV longevity), Doug and Sydell Schubot, Gene and Marcia Ap- plebaum, Stan and Connie Krandall, Burton and Suzy Farbman, Fred and Elaine Greenspan. Music by Mel Ball and Col- ours with their usual fine rhythms for dancing . . . Cuisine by Executive Chef Gilbert Drouelle, Chef de Cuisine Michael Houlihan and their very fine staff. So many people having so wonderful a time for the great cause for which MCF stands . . . Last year's affair was at the home of David and Effie Weinberg._ The London Chop House looks better than ever . . . as it continues to ooze with world-famous class elegance. TWO FELLOWS, Sy Raskin (no relation) and another, have the "very rough" task of entertaining about 40 women on the "Mississippi Queen" paddle wheel steamboat that left last week to cruise up and down the Mississippi . . . Their chore for the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. is to act as hosts . . . dancing and just in general keeping the gals oc- cupied and happy during the 11-day cruise . . . "It is definitely a tough job," said Sy before he left, "but some- one has to do it." . . . No, Sy isn't married. ANOTHER NEW restau- rant is scheduled to open soon in Southfield . . . It'll be Mr. Kabob, a Middle East eatery with seating for 48 people .. . at Sunset Strip on North- western Highway . . . Mr. Kabob is not a chain . . . and has no affiliation with the Kabob Grill in Southfield Plaza which recently opened its second operation on Grand River in Farmington. MORE ON THE fashion show trail . . . which seems to be a popular route for social- strutting these days. Fantasia, a made-in- Michigan benefit for American Lung Association at Hyatt Regency Dearborn, was an explosion of fashion and color and put on by Leah Beurer of Begadim on the Boardwalk, Orchard Lake Road . . . with Leah Marks, producer, as about seven of our state's top dress designers showed their finest wares .. . Also Kosins Clothes, Mat- thewHoffman Jewelers, Furs by Robert, United Optical, makeup by Malibu Salon and hair styling of Belissimo II. Betty Gerisch, one of the chairpersons, deserves some
