LET ME HELP YOU KEEP
YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION!!!

And get into the Best Shape of your life!!

nology, made of ceramic
fibers, boron, krypton and
several other space age ma-
terials, all moulded together
under sanitary conditions.
I'm still playing with a first
generation aluminum racket
— green plastic throat, and a
warp like a lacrosse stick. My
racket twangs, vibrates and
sends electric shocks to my
elbow if I hit the ball even
slightly off-center.
No matter! If it makes her
happy to have a racket with
custom multi-colored gut
stringing, made of materials
normally found only in in-
terplanetary flight, it's worth
it. We'll find some way to han-
dle the financing charges.
Once she had invested in
the racket, she started taking
serious lessons, for serious
money — and not from me!
From some stranger, some
kid, some teaching pro with
an Australian accent. For
forty bucks an hour, he tells
her to bend her knees. That's
cheap. 1\venty dollars a knee!
Wonderful! I'm happy for her.
I'm glad she's discovered
bending her knees. We have
that in common. I would have
told her for nothing. I don't
understand why the woman
feels she has to go outside the
family to get instruction.
She's married to a cache of
tennis knowledge.
Now when I arrive home,
there's a note fastened to the
refrigerator by-a vinyl-backed
magnetic frog. "Supper is in
the aluminum pan. Just heat
and eat. Don't wait for me."
Or even worse! No aluminum
pan. No supper.
My wife arrives home after
her game has ended, sweaty
and tired, but exhilarated.
She's ready. I'm ready for bed.
She's ready to talk.
She tells me about her
match — in excruciating de-
tail, from the opening double
fault to the final unforced
error. There can't be that
many significant points.
Even if there were, who could
remember them all? Who
would want to remember
them all? She tells me about
the lives, the personalities,
the tennis philosophies of
each of the members of her
group, and their spouses,
whether or not they played
that evening. Who cares?
Can it really take three
hours to describe a one hour
match?
I thought I knew every-
thing about tennis but I
realize now that I was wrong.
What I knew were the basics
— bend your knees, watch the
ball, get your racket back, try
to get your opponent to open
up his can of new balls.
I had overlooked one of the
biggest of all on the long list
of tennis maxims, the truest
of them all.

Nothing, but nothing is as
boring as someone else's
tennis stories! ❑

WHAT IS P'TACH?

U.S. Savings
Bonds make
good business
sense!

David M. Shepherd, M.D., offers
patients a one-stitch cataract
surgical procedure.

Parents for Torah for All Children.
"P'TACH," is a national non-profit
organization which provides secular and
Jewish education for children with learning
disabilities who are enrolled in our schools.
Before P'TACH existed, the doors of
almost all day schools were indeed closed
to children with all levels of learning
disabilities, and the parents of these special
children were often frustrated by a
community that failed to recognize the need
for providing special educational programs
in our schools. Now, through P'TACH, the
doors of our schools are "OPEN" to all
our children.

One Stitch
Eye Surgery

Traditional cataract sur-
gery has required multiple
stitches to close an incision
needed to remove a cataract.
The one-stitch method, per-
formed on a same-day, outpa-
tient basis, usually means
less discomfort and faster
recovery for patients, an im-
portant consideration for
older peple. In addition, pa-
tients are able to get glasses
within a few days after
surgery rather than waiting
six or more weeks as with
conventional methods.
Using a technique called
phacoemulsification, Dr.
David Shepherd, an eye
surgeon in Novi, extracts the
cloudy lens through a micro
incision no more than 3/16ths
of an inch long. One self-
absorbing stitch is usually all
that is needed to close the in-
cision. This results in
minimal trauma to the eye,
less distortion of vision and a
much shorter wait for glasses.
"I am pleased to be able to
offer my patients a procedure
which means most of them
will be able to see better
sooner," says Dr. Shepherd.
Dr. Sherpherd specializes in
cataract surgery and is a
board certified ophthalmolo-
gist. He is affiliated with
several Detroit Medical
Center hospitals including
Harper, Grace, and Huron
Valley. ❑

The Michigan branch, P'TACH of
Michigan, Inc., was founded in May of
1979 by a group of parents, lay people and
professionals in fields related to special
education. Our main objective is to provide
special education for learning disabled
children with the goal of mainstreaming
them into regular classrooms whenever
possible. Today, P'TACH has grown to
serve over twenty children in its two
programs. Unfortunately, due to a lack of
financial resources, children are currently
on a waiting list to enter P'TACH's
programs.
