T

ennis is a very simple
game once you get the
hang of it. A man or a
woman, either alone or with a
partner, hits a little fuzzy
ball, usually yellow but some-
times white, over a net. The
opposition, a man or a woman,
either alone or with a partner,
tries to hit it back. That's it.
Its a very simple game.
Of course, there are some
subtleties. Bend your knees.
Watch the ball. That sort of
thing. I have been playing
this game a long time. I am
an experienced player. -
In the old days, before my
wife took up tennis, I used to
come home after an afternoon
or evening on the courts and
pass along some of my know-
ledge. My wife would be put-
tering around the house,
happy and content, dandling
the kids or resting after her
training for the marathon or
studying for her law degree or
whatever happened to be oc-
cupying her time at the time.
I am an outstanding racon-
teur. In the spirit of togeth-
erness, I would tell her about
my afternoon of tennis, the
interesting details, the
highlights of my match. I'd
cover the philosophies, the
strategies, the joys of tennis.
I'd describe the personalities
and the home life of the
players so she could see the

preparation that goes into a
match.
This wasn't idle chatter.
This was significant stuff. lb
avoid even the appearance of
being too wrapped up in ten-
nis or too self involved, I'd
occasionally slip in a few
spellbinding opinions about
other matters — the infield
fly rule, the designated hitter.
It's important to be well
rounded.
I didn't do this for myself.
A man and wife should have
interests in common.
I may have been too in-
teresting.
My wife, at about 45 years
of age, began playing tennis.
She has been playing now for
about a year and then some.
The family that plays to-
gether, stays together. Give
me some credit. I volunteered
one of my old wood rackets,
not a bad piece of equipment.
I offered some of my time,
ready access to a steady
supply of used balls and some
instruction. I've been playing
this game a long time. She
was lucky to have me.
Then, she appeared one eve-
ning in a brand new tennis
outfit. One of several, it
turned out. Distinctive big-
name logo on the skirt and
blouse, and $100 tennis shoes
— each. She also shelled out
major money for a new racket
endorsed by some current
tennis millionaire in his teens.
The racket is a state-of-the-
art piece of modern tech-
