New Drug
For Headaches

Sinai Hospital will in-
vestigate the effectiveness of
a new drug in the treatment
•of menstrual migraine
headaches.
Under the direction of Dr.
Edward Lichten, an obstetri-
cian/gynecologist at the
hospital, the drug Lupron
will be tested for six months
on 20 female patients who
suffer from migraine pain.
Lupron will be provided by
Illionis-based TAP
Pharmaceuticals.
More than 20 million
Americans suffer from head-
ache disorders. Migraines in
women are believed to be a
hormonal event, tied to fluc-
tuations in estrogen levels.
Women of reproductive age
experience more than three
times as many migraine
headaches as do men of
similar age.
The Sinai study, "Lupron
L.A. (GnRH Agonist) in the
Treatment of Menstrual
Migraine," will examine if the
drug, which acts to lower
estrogen levels, is effective in
the treatment of migraine
headaches in women.
Lupron is approved in the
United States for the treat-
ment of prostatic cancer and
in Canada and Europe is
widely used for the treatment
of endometroisis.
Patients invloved in the
study at Sinai must be
women between the ages of
18 and 45. They must not be
taking any hormonal com-
pound including oral con-
traceptives and estrogen sup-
plements. The study group
will consist of women in
whom standard headache
medical therapy has proven
unsuccessful.
