Alter- nating workouts on a sta- tionary bicycle, treadmill and rowing machine, and- throwing in a few weight training sessions may offer the best training regimen for the person looking to simply improve cardiovascular fitness and maintain condi- tioning. Cross training outside the gym may consist of tennis, skiing (Nordic or Alpine), skating (roller or ice), swimming, running, bicycl- ing, walking, basketball, backpacking, rock climbing or almost any other physical activity which raises heart rate and improves muscle conditioning. These ac- tivities may require more costly equipment, profes- sional training and spe- cialized venues, but they may also eliminate boredom, add interesting physical and mental challenges, and make you forget you're working out. An athlete who plays basketball, runs, and bicycles for several weeks may want to alternate swimming, volleyball and rowing for the next several weeks. The more variety, the better, as long as the in- dividual's strength and car- diovascular fitness goals are being achieved. It is important that anyone interested in an exercise regimen consult a physician before starting, and the fitness newcomer would also be well advised to seek the advice of a professional trainer before beginning a workout program. Though popularized by commercials featuring two- sport star Bo Jackson, runn- ing back for the NFL's Los Angeles Raiders and out- fielder for baseball's Kansas City Royals, cross training is most often associated with the triathlete. The ultimate triathlon, Hawaii's Iron Man, requires triathletes to swim two miles, bicycle 150 miles, and finish with a full 26-mile marathon run. To compete, the triathlete needs to be better than average in all three sports, and training consists of equal amounts of work in each. Conditioning does carry over from one ac- tivity to another, but sports- specific training is crucial for these athletes. Perhaps an older form of cross training is that used by decathletes, like America's Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner. The 1 0-event decathlon competition re- quires athletes to handle very diverse track and field events, from sprints on the track to hurling the javelin. Here, strength training, as well as cardiovascular fitness, becomes important, adding another dimension to cross training. The secret to cross train- ing, it seems, is to define athletic goals, then design an interesting program which will lead toward those goals. The activities are not so important as the quality of the time spent in each ac- tivity. And while variety may be a key factor in helping elite athletes reach competitive goals, it may also be the weekend warrior's secret weapon. It may help these exercisers stick with their program and, thus, improve muscular conditioning, physical endurance and car- diovascular fitness. Maybe Bo really does know, after all. ❑ Walking For Fitness The fitness craze is sweep- ing the country. No wonder, with more than 80 percent of all Americans saying they regard "good health" as their number one concern, accor- ding to a Gallup poll. They're taking to exercise programs. And they are lear- ning that by regular physical activity, they can help their bodies maintain, repair and improve themselves. They are also finding that a general ex- ercise and fitness program is enhancing their self-images and their ability to handle stress. Fitness experts claim that exercise, when combined with good eating habits and stress Control, can help you lose weight by burning excess calories and controlling your appetite. However, you must be motivated. The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports cautions that unless you are convinced of the benefits of fitness, you will not succeed. Low-impact exercise, such as walking, is growing in popularity as a moderate ap- proach to exercise. It is easy and safe, and can bring you a healthier, happier lifestyle at no expense. It requires no club membership or special equipment. Walking benefits almost everybody, regardless of age. More than 66 million men and women are walking regularly because it is a good form of exercise. ❑
