Racism Worries
European Soccer

Maccabi Plans
Pan Am Games

Amsterdam (JTA) — The
authorities are in a quan-
dary over how to handle the
anti-Semitism and other
forms of racism and bigotry
that plague soccer matches
in the Netherlands and
elsewhere in Europe.
It may be easier to deal
with physical violence, such
as the large-scale damage
done to railroad coaches by
traveling soccer fans, than
the verbal violence from
spectators in the stands.
Verbal assaults are
directed against Jewish and
black players and homosex-
ual referees.
When Amsterdam's Ajax
football club takes to the
field, it is greeted by a mass
hissing, which is supposed to
signify gas escaping from
the gas chambers.
Because Ajax had some
star Jewish players years
ago, it gained the reputation
of being a Jewish club,
which it is not.
Black players are
assaulted with so-called
"jungle" noises and bananas
thrown at them.

Philadelphia — United
States Commitee Sports for
Israel (USCSFI) is accepting
athlete, coach and trainer ap-
plications for the seventh Pan
American Maccabi Games in
Montevideo, Uruguay, July
3-16.
The Pan Am Maccabi
Games are held every four
years in either Central or
South America. More than
2,500 athletes from Argen-
tina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile,
Colombia, Israel, Mexico,
Panama, Peru and the United
States will join host Uruguay
in 1991.
"The Montevideonos are ex-
tremely excited about hosting
the Games," said Barry T.
Gurland, Pan Am general
chairman. "We are looking
forward to these Games to be
the most exciting ever."
The Pan Am Maccabi
Games offer U.S. Jewish
athletes competition, friend-
ship, cultural exchange and
unity. In addition, some of the
U.S. athletes may win berths
on the U.S. team in the World
Maccabiah Games in Israel
two years later.
For information, contact the
USCSFI national office, 1926
Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pa.
19103, 215-561-6900.
