tinue on when you know it's
the last year" — a reference
to the upcoming 1991 sea-
son, slated to be the last of
Harwell's 30-plus with the
Tigers.
Harwell's situation is
comparable in some respects
to his in '64, said Allen.
Allen, like Harwell, was
told there were going to be
changes. Allen was told,
"It's nothing you did, you
know. We're just going to
make some changes." The
Yankees brought in a new
advertising agency and their
general manager, George
Weiss, went to the New York
Mets.
But there was no calling
for a boycott of the Yankees'
home opener, as there has

been in Detroit, although
Allen's firing did keep "all
the Yankees' secretaries
busy answering the phones
and the mail."
A major difference was
that Allen did continue in
baseball, though not with
the Yankees. "I got a call
right away from the
Milwaukee Braves," for
whom he wound up broad-
casting some games, and
from NBC, which hired him
to do baseball and football
telecasts.
And Allen returned to the
Yankees in the early 1970s
as a broadcaster. He now
does public relations for
them, in addition to doing
Major League Baseball's
"This Week In Baseball,"
which precedes weekend
game telecasts.
"It (broadcasting) happens
to be a business where there
is constant change," said
Allen. "Ernie's had a great
run, and deservedly so."
But — and here Allen em-
phasized he hadn't talked to
Harwell and was only speak-
ing on supposition — the
Tigers might want somebody
younger "or they might
want to go with an ex-
athlete. They have instant
credibility with the fans.
"There's got to come a
time" when changes are go-
ing to be made, said Allen.
"But if it was for a negative
reason; Ernie wouldn't be
broadcasting the 1991 sea-
son for Detroit."
Nevertheless, said Allen,
"It's a shocking thing. I
don't know just what 'new
direction' the Tigers are
thinking about going in."
