According to an official at the Board of Deputies who deals with anti-Semitism on a daily basis, there are "a couple of hundred" incidents a year, ranging from casual insults to hate mail and obscene phone calls. Acts of personal violence, he says, are "few and far between." British anti-Semitism, he says, is a function of world trends in general and events in Israel in particular. For 20 years after the Second World War, anti-Semitism was relatively dormant, but it began to re-emerge after the 1967 Six Day War. Following Israel's invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and its handling of the Palestinian uprising since 1987, anti- Semitism became far more open, unapologetic and ag- gressive. He expects the in- cidence to rise still higher as a result of the current inter- national climate. Until relatively recently, anti-Semitic manifestations in Britain were regarded as the work of the lunatic fr- inges — the extreme right, the extreme left and Moslem fundamentalists —although it is now conceded that anti- Semitism has now entered mainstream British society. Jewish leaders believe that anti-Semitism was given a free ride by the un- popularity of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who expressed her open admiration of what she perceived to be the family- centered, socially conscious, self-reliant qualities of British Jews. This was reinforced by the relatively large number of Jewish politicians — Mr. Nigel Lawson, Sir Leon Brittan, Sir Keith Joseph, Lord Young, Mr. Malcolm Rifkin — who were closely associated with Thatcherism and who achieved national prominence in her cabinets. In addition, Lord Jakobovits, the Chief Rabbi of Britain and the Com- monwealth, who preaches a philosophy of "pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps," was widely re- ferred to as Mrs. Thatcher's spiritual mentor. The most serious long- term threat to the Jewish community, however, is like- ly to come from radical elements within Britain's 2 million-strong Moslem community who are con- vinced that Salman Rushdie, author of the controversial novel, The Satanic Verses, is part of an international Jew- ew- ish conspiracy to undermine Islam. Following a recent demon- stration in the town of Luton, a burning effigy of Rushdie was placed against the door of the town's syn- agogue, the third such at- tack on the building. Jewish leaders privately express their regret at the failure of the churches to speak out forcefully against anti-Semitism, although a leading ecumenical journal, The Tablet, recently warned its readers of "the poison of anti-Semitism." "Only 50 years after the genocide of the Jewish peo- ple, it is widely assumed that the disease of anti- Semitism has finally been eradicated in civilized coun- tries," noted the journal. "It is precisely on that comfor- table assumption that the danger lies." [1] "imm1"11 N EWS Immmim" 19,000-Year-Old Skeleton Found Tiberias (JPFS) — Ar- cheologists have discovered a skeleton dating back at least 19,000 years on the shore of Lake Kinneret, not far from the cemetery of Moshavat Kinneret. The remains, uncovered by Danny Naddel of the Anti- quities Authority, were carefully removed from their shallow grave Nov. 8. Mr. Naddel told reporters at the scene that the body had been buried in the fetal position, in which the feet are drawn up towards the head. The skeleton is thought to have been that of a "mature person," although Mr. Naddel said they were un- sure whether it was that of a man or a woman. It is to be given a detailed an- thropological examination by Tel Aviv University. Mr. Naddel said the tests would add to the knowledge of the way of life of the prehistoric inhabitants of the area. Tests on the bones' mineral contents could give scientists a clearer picture of the diseases prevalent at the time, as well as the diet. Antiquities Authority spokeswoman Efrat Brown said the discovery was of prime historic importance. "So far only one other skeleton from this period has been found in the region, near Kibbutz Ein Gev." The discovery was made at the site of a village which carbon 14 tests have dated to 19,000 years ago. s
