if they have a moment to
chat.
"Don't launch into a
monologue of past relation-
ships and what you want out
of life," she said. "Really
chat."
Ms. Block doesn't recom-
mend talking too much the
first time, "but you should
try to talk about important
things — why you placed the
ad, why they answered it,
why you liked their letter.
Flatter them a little bit and
ask them questions."

"Too often in our society
we meet because of what we
look like and we don't ask
the important questions un-
til six months or a year later,
which is too late, if we don't
like their answers," she
said.
"Of course they might not
want to tell you everything"

because "they don't know
you yet."
Eventually, should the
exchange prove enticing
enough, the conversation
will probably turn to setting
up a meeting.
"Always meet at a public
place, no matter how much
you think you trust the per-
son," Ms. Block advised.
"Personals are one of the
safest ways to meet some-
one, if you follow that ad-
vice. Otherwise, they're not
safe at all."
Making a date that's sim-
ple and convenient for both
of you is best. And try to
schedule something with a
time limit or without the
pressure to make a night of
it.
"Lunch or a drink is best,"
she said. "Don't start with
dinner or a weekend
away." ❑

Jewish Singles On Road
Get Voice-Mail Option

RICHARD PEARL

Staff Writer

ewish singles traveling
to other metropolitan
areas can now plan
ahead to meet other Jewish
singles, thanks to a new ser-
vice being added to The Jew-
ish News People Connector-
Voice Connector immedi-
ately.
Beginning Dec. 21, both
Jewish News Voice Connec-
tor readers and advertisers
have the option of advertis-
ing to and responding to
Jewish singles in other cities
served by the National Jew-
ish Network.
The cities besides Detroit
are Cleveland, Baltimore,
Philadelphia, Hackensack,
N.J., Atlanta, Minneapolis-
St. Paul, Phoenix and San
Francisco, according to
Bonnie Lazar, sales repre-
sentative for Micro Voice
Applications, Inc.
There is no additional
charge for making a Voice
Connector ad available to
singles in other cities, she
said. The charge for using
the 900 system for the Voice
Connector remains at 95
cents per minute.
Jewish singles will have a
chance to communicate with
other Jewish singles in other
cities," said Mrs. Lazar.
"This new service will be
_ideal for Jewish singles from
Detroit, for instance, who
travel for business to other
cities, or who go to another
city to visit family and
friends for weekends or holi-
days," said Mrs. Lazar.
Those who participate will

j

be heard by singles in those
other cities who use the ser-
vice.
"It's our way of offering
something unique to our
member Jewish news-
papers" which can enhance
the services they already are
providing to those readers
using the 900 system, she
said.
There are three ways to
access the system.
• When new advertisers
in The Jewish News People
Connector place their Voice
Connector introductory
advertisement via the spe-
cial 800 number, they can
decide if they wish to have
the introduction heard in
other cities;
• When regular People
Connector advertisers access
the system to pick up their
Voice Connector messages,
they can elect to have their
introductory ad heard in
other cities; and
• When a reader responds
to a People Connector ad in
the Voice Connector system,
they also can choose whether
they want to browse locally,
nationally or both.
Those in the latter group
call 1-900-896-2837, access
code 64, and enter the box
number of the local ad to
which they wish to respond.
Mrs. Lazar added that the
system "is a great vehicle"
for Orthodox Jews who often
seek a shidduch (match) in
other cities. "All it can take
is one or two phone calls."
"Detroit's doing fantastic"
with the Voice Connector
system in terms of minutes
used, Mrs. Lazar said.
