a high price. Sean Patrick
Folster's jerky, angular hand
and arm movements skillful-
ly physicalize Manny's jagged
psyche.
Director Evelyn Orbach has
found the right mixture of
gravity and whimsy for the
production, which runs at the
Aaron DeRoy Theatre in the
Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center through Jan.
6. More important, she's
chosen a strong cast. The
crucial role of Stanley is
played by Daniel Kahn, a
12-year-old actor with
tremendous charm and a win-
ning smile. Though Daniel is
relaxed and engaging, there
are times when even he can't
make Mr. Horovitz' belabored
jokes interesting for the ump-
teenth time — particularly
one about chopped liver. And
there is an occasional need for
sharper timing, including the
Act I curtain line. But at Sun-
day night's opening, Daniel
was as cool as the more ex-
perienced actors in the midst
of serious lighting miscues
(which will no doubt be
corrected).
Mrs. Orbach has also
clarified the issues of identi-
ty facing all the characters
without neglecting the plen-
tiful comedy. The self-
educated Pearl is obsessed
with establishing her social
equality in the Sault's Jewish
community. "This is the bar
mitzvah that I deserve and
you will have it!" she yells at
Stanley. But it's Barney's
obsession that is more
serious: Stanley wants to
enter manhood as a Rosen.
Mr. Horovitz' play is small,
though not trivial, and Mrs.
Orbach makes sure the in-
timacy we feel with the
characters is never lost. The
details are striking. There's
the miserly Mr. Ardenshen-
sky, clutching a parcel to his
chest, almost a stereotype but
suggesting unfathomable
pain; Barney and Pearl in a
playful mood in bed; Barney
ogling a meat loaf; and a long,
silent scene as Stanley
ponders his dilemma.
Mr. Frieder provides the
evening's most thrilling mo-
ment as a sign painter who
discovers Barney wants to
mask the family's Jewish-
ness. The old man takes out
his brush, paints a Star of
David on his overalls, then
stalks out.
Everything turns out all
right in the end — this may
be the only comedy in which
the hero gets a date for his
bar mitzvah. "Little voices
get heard," affirms Mr.
Ardenshensky. "Voices of a
child, of families whose lives
have no impact on history —
only on each other." ❑
