D

etroit's biggest Jew-
ish singles event of
the year, — "The
Only Spot In Town" dance —
is scheduled for 9 p.m. Dec.
24 at the Maple-Drake Jew-
ish Community Center.
Co-sponsored by the JCC
Singles and The Jewish
News, the dance provides a
year-end venue for Jewish
singles to socialize on
Christmas Eve, when most
nightspots are closed.
Believed to be one of the
few of its kind in the United
States, "The Only Spot In
Town" generally draws 600
to 700 people over age 21.
This year's dance will
feature music by disc jockey
John Sarver, plus a variety
of light foods, snacks and
beverages.
In addition, the JCC's Jew-
ish Singles Video Dating
Service will debut. Member-
ship in it will afford area
Jewish singles a chance to
meet via the medium of
videotape.
According to Dr. Marty
Oliff, JCC assistant director,
service members make their
own tapes and biographies
and review those of others,
all via appointment at the
Maple-Drake Building, in
deciding whether to meet.
The two-minute videos will
be made by the Center's
audio-visual department and
the dating service's files will
be maintained by the JCC.

WHAT IS P'TACH?

Parents for Torah for All Children.
"P'TACH," is a national non-profit
organization which provides secular and
Jewish education for children with learning
disabilities who are enrolled in our schools.
Before P'TACH existed, the doors of
almost all day schools were indeed closed
to children with all levels of learning
disabilities, and the parents of these special
children were often frustrated by a
community that failed to recognize the need
for providing special educational programs
in our schools. Now, through P'TACH, the
doors of our schools are "OPEN" to all
our children.

The Michigan branch, P'TACH of
Michigan, Inc., was founded in May of
1979 by a group of parents, lay people and
professionals in fields related to special
education. Our main objective is to provide
special education for learning disabled
children with the goal of mainstreaming
them into regular classrooms whenever
possible. Today, P'TACH has grown to
serve over twenty children in its two
programs. Unfortunately, due to a lack of
financial resources, children are currently
on a waiting list to enter P'TACH's
programs.

Israeli Doctors Strike
Over Overtime Pay

Tel Aviv (JTA) — About
8,000 doctors went on strike
last weekend, disrupting
government and private
hospitals all over Israel, in-
cluding Hadassah-Hebrew
University Hospital in
Jerusalem.
The issue is second shifts
in operating rooms, for
which physicians receive
overtime pay.
The second shifts are in-
tended to reduce the waiting
time for elective surgery,
which has often been as long
as a year. The Finance Min-
istry says the additional pay
conflicts with the govern-
ment's national wage policy
and has demanded that the
second shifts be canceled.
The issue is before the

High Court of Justice. But
the Israel Medical Associ-
ation decided to call a strike
in advance of the court hear-
ing.
The result is that some
4,000 non-emergency opera-
tions scheduled for this week
had to be postponed.
Second-shift pay was in-
troduced several months ago
at hospitals run by Kupat
Holim, Histadrut's health
care agency. Doctors at other
hospitals demanded equal
treatment.
The Medical Association
has exempted Kupat Holim
hospitals and outpatient
clinics from the strike for the
time being.
They are being held in re-
serve.
