E.C. To Aid
Gaza, West Bank

Unique and imaginative

Brussells (JTA) — The Eu-
ropean Community has
decided to help the Palestin-
ians in the Israeli-
administered territories be-
cause of the dire financial
straits there, according to
the European commissioner
for Mediterranean affairs.
Abel Matutes told the 12
European Community for-
eign ministers here that the
territories have been brought
"close to disaster" by the dou-
ble impact of the Persian Gulf
crisis and the intifada.

Direct financial aid will
amount to about $8.5 million
this year and will almost
double next year, according
to E.C. sources.
The aid will help redress
revenues that have declined
by 20 to 40 percent, espe-
cially in the Gaza Strip.
The fragile economy has
been buffeted by a fall-off in
donations from the oil-rich
Persian Gulf states, which
affects mainly hospitals and
schools.
The simultaneous return
of Palestinians who worked
in Iraq and Kuwait but no
longer have jobs or salaries
to send home, aggravates
the unemployment problem,
the commissioner explained.
Palestinians who work in
Israel also have trouble fin-
ding jobs since the Temple
Mount riots on Oct. 8
worsened Arab-Jewish rela-
tions.
The territories also have
been hurt by the devaluation
of the Israeli shekel and the
Jordanian dinar.

Cancer Fund
Honors Mason

New York (JTA) — A
lifetime fellowship was
dedicated in the name of
Jackie Mason by the Israel
Cancer Research Fund, at its
11th annual Tower of Hope
Ball.
With characteristic self-
effacement, Mr. Mason,
whose Yiddish- style humor
has made smash hits of his
one-man shows on Broad-
way, told the guests, "I know
I'm a great humanitarian
but I can't prove it."
But Leonard Goldstein,
vice president of ICRF, af-
firmed that Jackie's
"humanitarianism is unsur-
passed."
Money raised at the ball,
held at the Pierre Hotel on
Nov. 11, will fund the new
Mason Fellowship, which
supports a cancer researcher
working in Israel.
