Mac McCoy Says, Come in out of the cold . . . ° Ariel Solomon: Filled the gap. This season, Solomon played every quarter of every game. Against Oklahoma, he continually out-maneuvered Sooners defender Scott Evans, considered a National Foot- ball League first-round draft choice. To become a starting offen- sive tackle on a national powerhouse team is no mean feat. Solomon packs his 275 pounds on a 6-foot, 6-inch frame. Because his weight is so evenly distributed, Solomon looks more like a defensive back than a bulwark in the offensive line. Solomon is a young man with dark, sultry Mediterranean good looks. He comes by this quality naturally since his grandfather was Italian. Solomon has had to show plenty of preseverance before coming into his own as a starter. It was not until last year that he earned his first letter, participating in over 200 plays. In 1988 he made the tough transition of swit- ching from defensive to offen- sive line. Solomon played three years at Boulder High School where he captained the team his senior year. He was rewarded with All-Centennial League honors as well as all- state recognition. To further evidence his ver- satility, he played center on the Boulder Panther basket- ball team averaging 15 points and 10 rebounds per game. Academically he is major- ing in economics, sporting a B average at CU. Solomon was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. When he was still a toddler, Ira and Hope Solomon took their only off- spring to El Salvador, where they ventured into the exotic business of collecting reptiles. Today the Solomons own Reef Encounter, an aquarium business in Boulder of na- tional and international scope. Another episode worthy of note in Solomon's boyhood is his kindergarten in a one- room schoolhouse in Gold Hill, 12 miles from Boulder. This is believed to be the oldest one-room schoolhouse still in existence in Colorado. Despite the fact that over 200 colleges and universities sought his talents, Solomon's modesty has never wavered. When he's not making blocks, he's out there inspiring his teammates and bolstering their spirits. Solomon's long-term goals portend a business career. On the other hand, if the NFL beckons, he will cock an at- tentive ear. ❑ Perfect! RICHARD PEARL Staff Writer R , ichard Grossman re- corded his first per- fect game in 30 years of bowling when he rolled a 300 in the Monday Night Men's League at Plum Hollow Lanes Dec. 10. "It's what you always dream of doing," said Grossman, who is carrying a 197 average this year, down a bit from last year's 209. "It was a lot easier than I thought it would be," he said. "A lot of guys say when you get to the last frame, you can't even walk to the line." The closest Grossman has been was two 289 games last year. He followed the 300 game with games of 211 and 213 for a 724 series. His previous high series was a 757, he said. ❑ Temple Israel Bowling Results WALK OR RUN INDOORS with: YOUR NEW FITNESS TRAINER Witi a Trotter Fitness Trainer, you can create your own program or go with one of 75 pre-programmed workouts geared to your fitness level and goals.
