Ontario Centre
Head Fired

Toronto (JTA) — Mark
Abbot, who was expected to
step down from his post as
director general of the On-
tario Science Centre, was
fired when he failed to sub-
mit his expected resignation.
Mr. Abbot was the focus of
protests by the Jewish com-
munity and the Ontario
government because of a
million-dollar contract he
signed in May with the
government of Oman to
design and install science
exhibits in a children's mu-
seum.
The contract was found to
be in violation of Ontario's
Discriminatory Business
Practices Act because it
specifically excluded Israeli
goods and services.
The boycott clause was
subsequently replaced by
one attesting that all mate-
rials would be from North
America.
Mr. Abbott issued a state-
ment saying he signed the
contract with the full advice
of government lawyers, and
with the understanding of
George Cohon, chairman of
the centre's board of trust-
ees.
Mr. Abbott claimed he had
"direct discussions with Mr.
Cohon, who was fully in-
formed of the Israel boycott
paragraph and its replace-
ment."
Mr. Abbott said he was
considering a wrongful
dismissal suit.

Cemeteries
Get Protection

New York (JTA) — The
Polish government has im-
posed a freeze on all building
projects in Poland that
might encroach on Jewish
cemeteries, Kazimierz
Dziewanowski, the new
Polish ambassador to the
United States, announced
here last month.
The freeze was ordered
after bones were uncovered
in the town of Kalisz by
workers digging to lay water
pipes for a school located in
what was once part of a Jew-
ish cemetery, Rabbi Chaskel
Besser, a member of the
presidium of Agudath Israel
of America and chairman of
the Polish Department of the
Ronald S. Lauder Founda-
tion, told the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency.
Mr. Dziewanowski made
his remarks at a meeting
convened by Agudath Israel
on Oct. 28. Participants in-
cluded Chasidic dynasties of
Polish origin.
