Now Joseph Discovered
Life's Richest Values

RABBI IRWIN GRONER

Special to The Jewish News

A

s this sidrah begins
we view Joseph, who
has attained the
highest position in the land,
second only to Pharaoh the
king. From all lands, people
pour into Egypt to exchange
their now useless gold for life-
sustaining wheat and grain.
Among the many who come
to Egypt are the sons of Jacob,
the brothers of Joseph. They

Vayigash:

44:18-47:27,
Ezekiel 37:15-28.

are the same men who not so
long back had cast Joseph in-
to the pit and then sold him
as a slave to a passing
caravan of Ishmaelites. Now
their lives and the lives of
their families were dependent
on him whom they had so
grievously mistreated.
They do not recognize in the
high Egyptian official their
brother. Joseph, however,
recognized them. How will he
react? Is his heart filled with
the desire for vengeance? Will
he utilize the opportunity to
repay them for his suffering?

Irwin Groner is senior rabbi
of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.

Joseph asks them of their
home and about their father.
They tell him how their
father has aged since he lost
his son.
Joseph could no longer
refrain himself. Shaken by
great emotion, he sends all
strangers from the room and
remains alone with his
brothers. We feel his
tenseness and excitement as
he exclaims — Ani Yosef
achichem
"I am Joseph,
your brother." In gentle tones
he speaks to them, saying he
bears them no ill will. For this
was the way providence chose
to bring him to Egypt so that
he might serve his people and
family. "Go back to Canaan,"
Joseph says, "and return
hither with Father, so that
the whole family may be
united once again."
Across the centuries, this
ancient scene reaches out to
touch our hearts. Joseph wins
our admiration. How often
does a person act so generous-
ly and as forgivingly? Out of
what great depth of character
did his graciousness flow?
Thomas Mann, in his pro-
vocative novels of Joseph,
says Joseph's life falls into
two parts: Before he was
thrown into the cistern and
after he was sold into slavery
by his irate brothers. With his
psychological probing, Mr.
Mann sees in these incidents
a profound parable. The des-
cent into the cistern sym-
bolizes the death of the boy;
