reflected in an article in
Israeli Democracy, a supple-
ment to the Jerusalem Post's
international edition, that de-
termined that Israeli youth's
hatred toward Arabs has in-
creased by about 10 percent
since 1976.
Especially telling was that
in the mid-1970's, 17 percent
of Israeli teens said they did
"not hate Arabs at all"; by
the late 1980s, this had
shrunk to nine percent.

Trying To Stab Officer
— New York Times, Dec. 1
Headlines in two of the
nation's most influential
newspapers for dispatches
about a Palestinian Arab
woman who had tried to stab
an Israeli policeman in
Jerusalem and was subse-
quently shot to death.
The Washington Post's
head, in particular, por-
trayed the Israelis as killers
and gave no hint of the con-
text of the incident.

IDF Continues
Reshuffling
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israel Defense Force con-
tinues to reshuffle its top
ranks.
Brig. Gen. Amnon Shahak,
currently chief of military
intelligence, has been nam-
ed deputy chief of staff in
charge of the IDF's opera-
tions branch.
Gen. Shahak will replace
Lt. Gen. Ehud Barak when
Gen. Barak takes over as
chief of staff in April. Gen.
Barak's appointment was
announced last month by
Defense Minister Moshe
Arens.
A veteran of 28 years' ser-
vice, Gen. Shahak was born
in Tel Aviv and drafted into
the army in 1962. He
volunteered for the para-
troopers.
Gen. Shahak was corn-
mander of the Beirut area
during the Lebanon war in
1982 and was later ap-
pointed commander of the
central region, which in-
cludes the West Bank, in
which post he served from
1983 to 1986.
He was named intelligence
chief four years ago.
