No Change Seen
In Vatican Policy
Rome (JTA) — No radical
changes of Vatican policy
toward Israel or the Middle
East in general are expected
to accompany the retirement
of Cardinal Agostino
Casaroli as Vatican secre-
tary of state and his
replacement by Msgr.
Angelo Sodano.
Nevertheless, the ap-
pointment of Msgr. Jean-
Louis Tauran, former papal
nuncio in Lebanon, to take
Msgr. Sodano's place as Vat-
ican minister for relations
with other states, may in-
dicate a heightened interest
in the region on the part of
the Holy See.
The changes were an-
nounced last week by Pope
John Paul II. The 76-year-
old Cardinal Casaroli retired
because of his advanced age.
According to long-time Vat-
ican-watcher Bruno Bar-
toloni, writing in Corriere
della Sera, "The style will be
different but the continuity
of Casaroli's line (Vatican
foreign policy) will remain
assured."
This can be taken to mean
the Vatican will continue to
withhold recognition of
Israel.
Jewish leaders who have
consistently prodded church
officials on that issue are ex-
pected to have their first
meetings with Msgrs.
Sodano and Tauran in their
new roles this week.
Representatives of the
International Jewish Com-
mittee on Interreligious
Consultations were invited
to attend ceremonies com-
memorating the 25th an-
niversary of the Nostra
Aetate decree, which defined
Catholic relations with the
Jewish people.
Msgr. Sodano, a close asso-
ciate of Casaroli's, has an
outstanding reputation as a
mediator. He has been ac-
tively involved in the Con-
ference on Security and Co-
operation in Europe, which
has taken a strong position
on human rights.

Unknown persons last week
smashed a large outdoor
menorah erected at
Gelderland Square shopping
center after it had been lit
for the first night of Chanu-
kah.
The first outdoor menorah
kindled in Amsterdam, it
was placed there by Rabbi
Isaac Vorst of the Chabad
Lubavitch organization.
