Imumuml NEWS [Don't be a i heartbreake r German Jews Draft Exempt Bonn (JTA) — Young Jews of draft age have found it easier lately to get exemp- tions from military service on religious grounds or be- cause their families were persecuted by the Nazis. The new leniency can be attributed to the end of the Cold War and the abrupt change of Europe's political landscape. Many politicians are talking about abolishing conscription altogether. But as recently as four years ago, it was difficult for Jewish recruits to get ex- emptions, because what was then West Germany was under pressure to meet its NATO quota. Jewish youths had to ap- pear before several com- mittees to explain their refusal to be drafted. The Jewish community intervened on behalf of some, who argued that they could not live with the idea of wearing a German uniform. The authorities refused to accept such objections and demanded proof that the recruit's family was persecuted by the Nazis or that his religious practices made it impossible for him to serve. In 1988, then Defense Min- ister Rupert Scholz made a highly controversial decision to exempt from military ser- vice both the sons and grandsons of Nazi persecutees. He acted on the urging of Heinz Galinski, chairman of the West German Jewish community. There was a backlash, however. Non-Jewish recruits appeared on televi- sion to assail the decision. They argued that anyone who enjoys the privileges of citizenship has an obligation to serve regardless of his or her origins. Consumer Prices Holding Steady Tel Aviv (JTA) — Con- sumer prices seem to be holding steady in Israel. The cost-of-living index rose by 1.3 percent in November, the same in- crease as in November 1989 and less than the 1.6 percent rise generally expected for the month, according to fig- ures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The annual inflation rate is cur- rently at 18.4 percent. Eat less saturated tat.
