NUMBER FIVE restau-
rant at the same locale
hopes to be the final one .. .
and the possibility is high
with 50 years of eatery ex-
perience by owners Al George
and Harold Horn of the new
Ming Dynasty . . . Site is on
Drake off Walnut Road,
where Wildflower, Drake,
Oliverio's and Panda found
rough sledding.
One room, called Dynasty
for Cantonese, Mandarin,
Szechuan and Hunan foods,
seats 130 and is strictly for
Oriental cuisine . . . the M.D.
Pub with 35 seats is an all-
American type lounge with
ground rounds, etc.
Al has had six different
operations including "Be My
Guest" with Mike Watzman
in Farmington Hills . . . and
Harold originally owned King
Lim's Gardens 10 years on
Nine Mile east of Coolidge
before moving to Greenfield
for nine years . . . He sold his
New King Lim's in Auburn
Hills a year ago after 10 years
there.
Harold will still retain the
King Lim's Gardens on
Greenfield in Oak Park,
which will be operated by his
wife Margaret . . . He is
credited with being the first
person to bring Szechuan
cooking into Michigan about
GARY MILLER, local
photographer, has had a ubi-
quitous presence at charity
functions throughout the

community . . . He's squeezed
the shutter, without charge,
for Cystic Fibrosis, Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame,
Juvenile Diabetes, Jewish
Community Center, Temple
Kol Ami, Jewish National
Fund, Children's Hospital,
Sinai Hospital Imaging
Center, AIDS benefit and
JCC North American Mac-
cabi Youth Games . . . Gary
recently relocated his studio
on Northwestern Highway,
alongside neighbors Linda
Hayman Gallery and Tamara
Institute de Beaute.
IF YOU haven't already
done so and intend spending
New Year's Eve at a restau-
rant, nitery or hotel, better
make plans as soon as possi-
ble . . . Money problems sure
haven't hit the NYE reserva-
tion takers.
A TASTE Of Michigan, the
cookbook published by
Michigan Restaurant
Association (MRA), is in its
second printing . . . The
association had such an over-
whelming response to the
cookbook that thousands of
additional copies are being
released.
It has over 200 recipes from
Michigan restaurants plus in-
formation on each con-
tributing eatery and a selec-
tion on Michigan wines.
A Taste of Michigan is
available at Waldenbooks and
B. Dalton Bookstores, as well
as most independents in the
state . . . Copies can also be
ordered directly from the
Michigan Restaurant
Association by sending a
check or money order for
$12.50 plus $1.50 per copy
covering shipping and handl-
ing to . . . MRA Cookbook,

GOLDEN MUSHROOM
recently translated its dinner
menu into Japanese although
most in the automotive in-
dustry here speak and read
English fluently . . . Reid
Ashton, Golden Mushroom
co-owner, says that
translating menu items that
contain words from European
languages wasn't an easy
task . . . "Many times," says
Reid, "the literal translation
didn't do justice to the food .. .
Two examples are fettuccine
and escargot . . . neither word
translates, and to use the
Japanese words for noodles
and snails isn't appropriate,"
Reid adds.
