Braun West Bloomfield I think the art contest you have every year for the cover of the Chanukah edition of The Jewish News is a wonder- ful idea. However, the names of all the children who ex- pended the time and talent to contribute, in my opinion, should be worth mentioning in The Jewish News. I realize that it may take an added effort on The Jewish News' part to print the names, but the recognition the child receives would, at the very least, diminish the disappointment in not "win- ning!" It is patently unfair and selfish for other Soviets to seek to jump to the head of the line (which actually in- cludes hundreds of thousands). Moreover, if these Jewish agencies were to pro- vide more substantial aid, it would encourage many, many more Soviet Jews to seek asylum, totally exhausting the Jewish community's resources set aside for refugees. If these people's American relatives are truly frightened about conditions in the Soviet Union, then they should en- courage their relatives to im- migrate to Israel (as many of my wife's relatives did rather than wait for .a visa to the U.S.) or lobby the U.S. govern- ment to increase the refugee quota. I was at Auschwitz for the entire war and lost too many family members and friends to those so-called "im- aginary" gas chambers. We must educate the public, especially the young, on the reality of the Holocaust, with visits to a Holocaust memorial center, not only to preserve the memory of six million people, but to ensure this never happens again. Perhaps this might prevent characters like Mr. Leuchter from further propagating their anti-Semitic views. Samuel Hornung Southfield Black Belts Multiplying I would like to correct an er- ror that appeared in the "Karate — Kosher Style" ar- ticle on Nov. 30 By no means do the four gentlemen in the article "comprise nearly the entire Jewish black belt population in Michigan," nor have they "cornered the market" in Jewish black belts. I personal- ly know of four other Jewish black belts (including myself) in this area, most of whom are affiliated with CAMA's dojo. As a matter of fact, The Jewish News even wrote an article about two of us last year. Soon, we may be the on- ly local dojo with female Jewish black belts. I am sure The Jewish News would like to correct the er- roneous impression that one can go only to those four gentlemen to be taught by a Jewish black belt. • Steven A. Kass Thintington Woods Karate Interest Remains High I read with interest your re- cent article regarding a Jewish interest in the martial arts. Unlike your article's im- plications, Jewish interest in karate is alive and well. A very large percentage of our student body at the Michigan Blackbelt Academy is Jewish (with even a rabbi or two enrolled). Our program in "Choi Kwang Do" is a balanced blend of self-defense and positive development that takes into account the needs of young bodies with a fluid, balanced physical program. Our Jewish students are a very important part of our program and have been since the opening of our program. James Myers Farmington Where Were Jews At Arab Protest? I can not fault the Arab students disrupting the Israel basketball team at the University of Michigan- Dearborn. This is what they have been trained to do and what has been effective for them. They had time to rehearse since Munich. The end results of control and coercion are their goal and they were successful. What can be faulted is the absence of principles and most obviously the absence of the militant Jewish student protest! Where are these flaming liberal revolutionaries when they have something to protest? Dr. Alvin Pensler - West Bloomfield
