tapping his pencil on his
desk. Mrs. Feldman even-
tually tells him to stop and
places her hand on Mai la's
shoulder so she will stop
moving around in her seat.
Mrs. Feldman doesn't miss a
thing.
Mitch goes to the
bathroom. Marla wants to go
next. She wants to know
why she must wait. Mrs.
Feldman is matter-of-fact
about it.
"One at a time," she says,
continuing with the lesson of
the day. Marla leaves the
room when Mitch returns.
Then Kevin follows. No
more after Kevin, she says.
Andy is chewing gum and
walks up to the trash can to
throw it out. On the way,
Benji trips him and is sent
within seconds to Dr.
Smiley's office. Instead, he
stands in the hall. He will
not get a detention today.
In Hebrew, they are
reading a folktale about a
king, who doesn't believe in

God, and a Jew, who is trying
to convince the king that
God exists. By the end of the
tale, the king believes the
Jew.
The students don't under-
stand the meaning of a
folktale. One by one, they
raise their hands, saying in
Hebrew the story is for little
kids, that this wouldn't real-
ly happen. The class gets
rowdy; somehow, Mrs.
Feldman calms them. They
are good students, she says.
It is just a long day.
Eighth hour ends and the
students anxiously dash to
electives. Many of the boys
end their day playing floor
hockey. Others are learning
how to make omelets. And a
few others are drawing and
painting props for the school
play, Fiddler On The Roof
"This is better than all the
rest of the classes," says
Shayna, who is painting.
At 3:30 p.m., the final bell
rings. School is out.
Tomorrow is a new day. 0
