Set for late April, (date to be announced) this com- petition will provide for talented students to be recognized, promoted and presented in concert with pro- fessional musicians. Intrumentalists invited to compete with specially selected repertoire are piano, violin, flute, clarinet, French horn and string quartet. Competitors are required to play from memory and to pro- vide their own accompanists for the competition. Youth between 14 and 17 years are invited to apply by Jan. 31, 1991. Applications will be accepted without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex or handicap. The entry fee is $10 for quartets and $5 for other instruments. Among the five judges for the Mozart Youth Competi- tion will be music critics John Guinn and Avigdor Zaromp, as well as Dr. Peter Schoen- bach, chairman of the Music Department at Wayne State University. Judges will award one first prize of $300 and two honorable mention prizes of $100 each. Winners will also be featured in a gala perfor- mance in autumn 1991 with the Lyric Chamber Ensemble.
