The Philadelphia artist has designed a colorful card that at once expresses those concerns as well as helps celebrate Chanukah. Sales of the holiday cards, which feature menorot on the cover and come in packs of 10, benefit UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund. It is the only Chanukah card offered by UNICEF. As an artist involved in Jewish themes — Ms. Teutsch's illustrations grace the book of The Jewish Holi- days; her calligraphy adorns the new Reconstructionist prayer book —Ms. Teutsch feels that her card contri- butes to a better under- standing between Jew and non-Jew. The artist says, "I thought it was important that UNICEF, as an interna- tional organization, be sen- sitive to the cultural needs of its Jewish supporters. I also had a sense that some Jews felt alienated from UNICEF, a sense of alienation based on misinformation." That misinformation, says Ms. Teutsch, stems from a mix-up in the minds of some, who link perceived anti- Israel attitudes on the part of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scien- tific and Cultural Organiza- tion, to UNICEF. "These two groups are totally independent of each other,"says Ms. Teutsch, who acknowledges UNES- CO "has a history of anti- Israel sentiment." The artist's history with UNICEF goes back seven years, when she submitted her work to the organiza- tion's New York head- "I thought it was important that UNICEF, as an international organization, be sensitive to the cultural needs of its Jewish supporters." quarters.
