"GIVE ME a break!"
writes Sol Lakind . . . "After
being married 60 years and
not having to even boil an
egg, I find myself in a dilem-
ma. My wife is in a nursing
home and I'm left alone.
"Where am I going to eat
and how am I going to eat
three meals a day? My doctors
tell me I must eat regularly.
My relatives and friends give
me all kinds of suggestions.
"But this is not my beef. I'm
complaining about experien-
cing that .a single person go-
ing to restaurants does not
get the breaks or discounts
that many of them advertise.
Like those 50 percent-off or
two-for-one offers in The
Jewish News (buy one entree,
get another free or
discounted).
"What do I have to do, go
out and rustle up another

More than 400
people relived
their past. For one
night, the year was
1965 and the old
neighborhood was
exactly the way it
was in the 1960s.
And so were we.
Vandenberg
Elementary
School, and its
former students,
looked great.

single or pick one up off the
street to take advantage of
the advertised specials?
"Also, upon entering many
restaurants I'm approached
by the seating person who
asks, 'How many?' When I
say one, they look at me
strangely and try to put me at
the smallest table near the
kitchen or rest room."
DORIS Ruskin Goldstein
sends her reflections about
another reunion . . . "Last
night we were 17. Oh, we
weren't really. We were port-
ly silver-haired businessmen
and well-coiffed grand-
motherly types, some of
whom happened to be high-
powe•ed career women as
well. But on this one magical
evening we looked straight
through faces we may not
have seen for lo, some 40
years, found lost fast friends
and fleeting romances and we
were, indeed, 17 again.
"One small group of women
came from far and wide that
afternoon to lunch together
and alternately toasted each
other on how well they
looked.
"And on into the evening

there where whoops of joy at
seeing the quiet young boy
you sat next to in study hall
turned distinguished physi-
cian or the svelte blonde who
was neither svelte nor blonde
in 1950.
"Time has treated the Cen-
tral High School class of 1950
well. We were the fortunate
ones who grew up in the best
of times within the unique
community that was Central
without the peer pressures
which faced our children or
the uncertainties about the
future which they face for
theirs. Yes, life is not quite the
same today, but last night, for
some 450 strong of us it was."
THAT JARLSBERG lite
cheese imported from Norway
and distributed here by Mike
and Allan Must at Detroit Ci-
ty Dairy, can now be gotten at
Vineyard's Cafe & Deli on
Northwestern . . . It has all
the flavor of a true creamy
Jarlsberg and the nutritional
numbers are good too . . . A
one-ounce serving has
80-calories, four grams of fat
and 10 milligrams of
cholesterol . . . According to
USDA figures, the same size
serving of regular Jarlsberg
has 107 calories, 7.7 grams of
fat and 26 milligrams of
cholesterol.
LET'S BE FAIR . . . It's
ridiculous to say that the on-
ly thing doctors do is play golf
. . . Many doctors are
dedicated professionals who
are just as devoted to tennis
. . . A young man asked his
doctor, "Is it true that if we
study hard, don't drink,
smoke or fool around we'll
live longer?" . . . The doc
replied, "We won't know for
sure until somebody tries it."
. . . Dr. Daniel Panush tells of
the patient who told his doc-
tor he wanted a second opi-
nion . . . "Sure," said the doc-
tor, "as soon as you pay for the
first one."
A MAILBOX has been set
up at Oakland Mall
specifically for mail to the
men and women serving
overseas during the holiday
season . . . U.S. Postal Service
joined hands with Oakland
Mall for this bit of
thoughtfulness . . . Stamp
machines are there as well
. . . Also, the appropriate ad-
dresses for Army, Navy, Air
Force and Marine units are
posted above the mailbox .. .
It's on the main level north of
the Center Court area.
HERE'S A BIG hand for
the Farmington Hills police
. . . They don't fool around .. .
and it costs you bucks to park
in a handicapped spot
without a permit . . . Hope
cops in many other corn-
munities stop looking the
other way. ❑
