mit that libraries have their
place.
Even though nothing
would give me more
pleasure, we just don't have
room for 21 sets of en-
cyclopedias or 10 years of
back copies of Popular
Mechanics. And we really
don't need a home
astronomy library or the
complete works of Wilifred
Sheed — although I know
someone who does.
Actually, I have tried to
use the library, but I end up
going crazy trying to limit
myself to 15 selections. Not
that I can read 15 books in
two weeks; I just go crazy
trying to limit myself.
For me, the library is just
one big tease. Aware of our
problem, we have managed
to make our daughters
believe that the library is for
borrowing books. As for us,
compulsion's our game.
You probably still have the
corsage from your high
school prom. I still have the
book of poetry I bought while
out shopping for my prom
dress.
You probably have lots of
books that are related to
your hobbies. I have dozens
of cookbooks. (Have you ever
eaten in our house? Of course
not. Even we don't eat in our
house); loads of books about
gardening (Anybody been in
our yard lately? We certainly
haven't); and scads of books
about health and fitness (We
loathe exercise and fear
bran). You get the message.
So while you deal with
your smoking, overeating
and carousing, I will be busy
reading a book about hyp-
nosis.
My husband is in the mid-
dle of two books, one about
business ethics, the other
about humor in the Bible.
To the casual observer,
this might seem like
harmless enjoyment of our
leisure time. But to us, the
afflicted, we know what it is.
It's compulsion, and we've
got it bad. ❑

Israel Air
Fares To Rise

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Air
fares to and from Israel will
rise by 6 to 9 percent on
December 10, according to
the Transport Ministry. The
increase, the second rise
resulting from the Gulf
crisis, is designed to com-
pensate airlines for higher
costs of fuel and insurance.
The International Air
Transport Association
decided on the hikes three
weeks ago.
