Murder Suspect
'Not Guilty'

New York (JTA) — A hear-
ing in Manhattan Superior
Court last week turned
raucous after El Sayyid
Nosair, the Egyptian-
American accused of kill-
ing Rabbi Meir Kahane,
entered a plea of not guilty.
Judge Alvin Schlesinger
said Mr. Nosair could be
freed after posting bail of
$300,000. A date for the trial
was scheduled for March 4.
Rival groups of Jewish and
Arab militants shouted at
each other and had to be
kept apart by court officers.
Mr. Nosair, 35, was also
charged with two counts of
attempted murder, assault
and criminal possession of a
weapon.
Rabbi Kahane was gunned
down Nov. 5 in a midtown
hotel shortly after delivering
a speech on the dangers
Arabs posed to Israel and the
Jews.

Emigre Passport
Can Be Returned

Geneva (JTA) — Jews who
left the Soviet Union will
soon be able to reclaim their
Soviet passports, according
to an official of the Soviet
Foreign Ministry.
The official, Nikolai Smir-
nov, said that the 1967
decree under which Jews
emigrating from the Soviet
Union lost their citizenship
will be abolished shortly.
Jews who asked to
emigrate were mandated to
relinquish their citizenship
and, moreover, pay about
500 rubles each to do so.
Mr. Smirnov said he hoped
a new decree will be in place
by January.
