"It's nice that the chaplain
over there says it's O.K., but
I'm concerned that the Pen-
tagon says it doesn't care, or
that it doesn't know, or that
there are no channels for it
to get done," Dr. Stiebel
said. "If it was that easy to
get kosher food, I don't think
any of these issues would be
coming up."
And there appears to be
valid reasons for the skep-
ticism of kashrut-observant
soldiers.
Col. Peterson said Jewish
servicemen can receive
kosher meals in Saudi
Arabia, at the same time
that a major Orthodox Jew-
ish organization has receiv-
ed word that the military
has no formal means to pro-
vide those meals.
He also argued that no
"100 percent kosher-keeping
servicemen" are on duty in
Saudi Arabia, while several
of his subordinates said they
are certain that the opposite
is true.
And at least one military
chaplain and the JWB
Chaplain's Council assert
that some MREs are kosher,

Jewish organization Agudas
Israel of America, "There is
no formal mechanism within
the military to get kosher
food," said Washington
representative Abba Cohen,
after speaking with repre-
sentatives of the military
and the federal government.
Jewish servicemen have
apparently been able to ob-
tain kosher food informally
without apparent problems,
until now, Mr. Cohen and
others suggested.
On military bases or ships
here or abroad, individual
arrangements with a
chaplain or a mess sergeant
were usually enough to meet
dietary restrictions.
Also, during past conflicts
the military had an obliga-
tion to provide for the needs
of Jews drafted into service,
Mr. Cohen said.
An all-volunteer military,
combined with the unusual
circumstances of combat
duty in an Islamic nation
has strained those informal
