For One Night, A School Reunion
Brings Back Old Neighborhood

MON.-THURS. II a.m.-8 p.m.
FRI. & SAT. II a.m.-9 p.m.. Closed Sun.

L

inda Solomon, celebrity
photojournalist, was
one of the graduates
from Vandenberg Elementary
School, whose reunion she
recently attended.
The pictures here were
taken by Linda, who also
gives us her views on the gala
shindig.
"For one night and one
night only, the year was not
1990; it was 1965, and for one
night, the old neighborhood
was exactly the way it was in
the '60s. This 'once-in-a-
lifetime' experience was our
elementary school reunion.
But this reunion was dif-
ferent from others because
this party did not take place
in a hotel or rented hall, but
in our school — Vandenberg
Elementary School in nor-
thwest Detroit.
"Over 400 people experienc-
ed reliving their past. It was
a treasure hunt for faces. We
remembered the faces of
children, but those children
are now adults in their 30s
and 40s.
"Many arrived with

Rochelle Froelich and Barbara Hertz.

"Everyone shared remem-
brances and many of the
`kids,' including Ilona
Helfman and Mark Haron,
brought old scrapbooks, photo
albums, bar mitzvah pictures,
slambooks and home movies
— not videos!
"Rochelle Gutman Froelich
wore her Vandenberg beanie
and someone asked if she was
a rabbi.
"Lisa Rappaport Zagha
relived her past by sitting on
the bench in the principal's
office.
"Richard Owen, the Kevin
Costner of Vandenberg, hasn't
changed. And neither have
the school and teachers. We
toured the halls and visited
with former teachers Shirley
Benyas, Vivian Cooper,
Evelyn Berte and Naomi
Dallan.
"The auditorium was open
and this room brought back
memories of spelling bees and
newsreels for Debbie Nickin
Ribitwer, Jim Manchel and
Jane Schelberg.
"Elyn Egren Charlupski
and her brother Michael
Egren reminisced about the
pancake parties and ice
cream socials in the gym.
Wayne County Circuit Judge
Richard Kaufman fox-trotted
with childhood friend Carole
Field. The same kids who
were best friends 25 years ago
were together again, giggling
and gossiping. And for a mo-
ment, it looked as if nothing
had changed, but everything
has changed. But for one
night, we were all able to go
back to the way we were."

Rosenbaum, class of 1966,
writes, "I just wanted to drop
you a line and let you know
what a terrific reunion was
held for Vandenberg Elemen-
tary School. Vandenberg is
located near Eight Mile, be-
tween Schaefer and Green-
field, and Norfolk and Trojan.
The reunion took place right
at the school with a great tur-
nout for many classes from
the late '50s to the late '60s.
"Vandenberg truly was a
place where 'everybody knew
your name and were mighty
glad you came.' Cheers to all
my fellow Vandenbergers."
