he Jewish Welfare
Federation board of
governors has nixed
plans to purchase 5 1/2 acres
of land on 13 Mile Road east
of Northwestern in Farm-
ington Hills for future agen-
cy headquarters.
"We chose not to pick up
the option to buy," said Fed-
eration executive director
Michael Berke. "There were
too many issues that
precluded it from being a
viable option."
Mr. Berke said the Federa-
tion is looking at other op-
tions within Farmington
Hills — one site at the
southwest corner of 13 Mile
Road and Northwestern. He
said the Federation has
signed a six-month option on
that parcel, which is half the
cost of the previous site.
He would not disclose
details on the cost.
In August, the Federation
board authorized its exec-
utives to purchase land for
development of a new office
building for the agency. No
timetable for a possible
move has been set, and Mr.
Berke said all options will
still be pursued.
Some members of the
community have been lobby-
ing the Federation to con-
sider Southfield for its next
home, but Mr. Berke said
they are looking primarily

in Farmington Hills.
A recent demographic
study shows that an
estimated 28,000 of 96,000
Jews live in Southfield.
Southfield's elected offi-
cials in September launched
a public campaign urging
the Federation to show its
commitment to the Jewish
community by moving to
their city.
In separate moves, the
Southfield City Council and
the Southfield School Board
sent letters to Federation
President Mark Schlussel,
asking him to reconsider the
choice. The city officials
offered to help the Federa-
tion locate a site.
Eli Robinson, Southfield
City Council president, said
the Federation hasn't ac-
cepted their offer.
"We haven't ruled out
Southfield, but we are not
looking there," Mr. Berke
said.

Federation officials said
they have not ruled out leas-
ing an existing building.
But, they have said, Farm-
ington Hills is central to the
Jewish community. If a pur-
chase is made, the land will
be banked until a decision is
made.
The Federation has main-
tained offices at 163
Madison partly as a symbol
of its commitment to Detroit.
Officials have been discuss-
ing a move for the past four
years.
