Sinai Wins Award,
Plans Test Program

Sinai Hospital's obstetrics
and gynecology residency pro-
gram has been awarded the
Berlex Resident Education
Award for 1991. Sinai, the on-
ly winner of the award in the
state of Michigan, was laud-
ed for its commitment and
support of research in the
field of obstetrics and
gynecology.
As part of the national
award, Sinai has been asked
to designate one of the
hospital's obstetrics and
gynecology residents to par-
ticipate in a January 1991
epidemiology/clinical trial
course developed specifically
for the Foundation by a na-
tionally respected faculty of
experts in these fields.
Upon completion of the
course, it is expected that the
candidates who have par-
ticipated will return to their
respective residency pro-
grams equipped with the
tools and knowledge to
enhance their programs, and
ultimately, the specialty of
obstetrics and gynecology.

Sinai will investigate the ef-
fectiveness of a new drug in
the treatment of menstrual
migraine headaches in a
study to begin this month.
Under the direction of Dr.
Edward Lichten, an obstetri-
cian/gynecologist, the drug
Lupron will be tested for six
months on 20 female patients
who suffer from migraine
pain. Lupron will be provided
by Illionis-based TAP
Pharmaceuticals.
Patients involved in the
study at Sinai must be
women between the ages of
18 and 45. They must not be
taking any hormonal corn-
pound including oral con-
traceptives and estrogen sup-
plements. The study group
will consist of women in
whom standard headache
medical therapy has proven
unsuccessful. All patients
must sign a consent form to
participate.
To take part in the study
please contact Sinai's Medical
Research Department at
493-6403.
