Festival director, Arnon
Goldfinger, described the laid-
back atmosphere, with
visitors staying in local stu-
dent homes, as "fantastic."
Danish student Niel Ardan
won first prize with his film
Hugo from Himmerland.
Some of Israel's best known
dance troupes, including the
Batsheva Company, Bat Dor,
Kol V'demama, the Kibbutz
Contemporary Dance Com-
pany and Inbal, had a suc-
cessful year both in Israel and
abroad. In July, many of them
took part in the three day
Karmiel Dance Festival,
which was attended by nine of
the most prominent dance
critics in the world, including
Clive Barnes of the New York
Post and David Dougill of the
London Sunday Times.
Mainly a folk dance show-
case, the festival hosted
dozens of troupes from around
the world. One event, with
four dance groups par-
ticipating, was scheduled for
4:30 a.m. on a Galilee hillside.
Visiting dance companies
and soloists included
Beriozka, the Moiseyev Com-
pany, Dinna Bjorn of the
Royal Danish Opera and
prima ballerina Liliana
Belfoire from Argentina. An
unusual event was the ap-
pearance of the Moscow
Water Circus, with dancing
bears and dolphins.
Finally, the first Jerusalem
Poetry Festival was held in
Jerusalem on the theme
"Poet as Revolutionary, Poet
as Exile." As might be ex-
pected, it generated political
fervor as well as poetry, but it
also demonstrated the vigor
and exictement of the
cultural scene in Israel. 111
