When Rhoda Morgenstern was Mary Richards' neighbor, she was obviously Jewish. (Her mother's idea of vintage red wine was a bottle of Manischewitz Concord Grape.) When Rhoda got her own show and • married, she and her obviously Jewish family were not supposed to be Jewish. Since their names and speech patterns remain- ed unchanged, the viewer had to wonder when the Family Morgenstern con- verted and why. Such portrayals do not send Jewish youths out look- ing for non-Jewish mates, but they do reinforce the belief that there is nothing wrong with doing so. Series intermarriage is merely symptomatic of how Jews generally are por- trayed on television. Ever since "The Goldbergs" left the air in the early 1950s, a series regular who is supposed to be a Jew has almost never engaged in anything Jewish. Series Jews, for example, eat whatever is put in front of them. No one ever says, "Gee, that looks great, but I'm kosher." If the character is a male and a scene re- quires wearing a skullcap, the oversized kippah looks more like a silk black teepee than a religious symbol. Enter attorney Ben Meyer, Rosie O'Neill's supervisor in the Los Angeles Public Defender's Office. Played by the actor Ron Rifkind, Mr. Meyer looks, talks and acts like everyone else. One thing, however, is different about him. Meyer wears a kippah. Sometimes he dons a knitted kippah, sometimes a suede one. He always an- chors it with a bobby pin. It's not referred to and no one makes a big deal about it. It's just there. In fact, it looks like it belongs there. Presumably, if the series lasts for a while, we will see Mr. Meyer in a variety of familiar situations. Sooner or later, he will have to rush home before the Sabbath falls, or grab a bite to eat on the run. Who knows? He even might study a page of the Steinsaltz Talmud dur- ing an off-moment in the P.D.'s office. In NBC's new series "Law and Order," New York County District Attorney Adam Schiff does not wear a kippah to the office. We know little about him other than he is inferentially Jew- ish. Yet the character has the potential of being an- other Ben Meyer. ❑ • after-theater y s thrk • u ids dl u e nindeanyi s 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. 968-0022 lincoln shopping center, 10 1/2 mile & greenfield, oak park THE GOLD COI in] OPEN 7 DAYS — YOUR HOST: HOWARD LEW SZECHUAN, MANDARIN, CANTONESE COMPLETE CARRY-OUT AVAILABLE NEW A LA CARTE DINNERS UNDER $5 24480 W. 10 MILE (IN TEL-EX PLAZA) West of Telegraph 353-7848 MINEnnlInn Available Sunday-Thursday Only Just order a STANDARD or HOUSE CUT Prime Rib dinner and we'll till your plate with a I2pound of sweet. succulent Alaska Snow Crab legs ...
