riends of the Israel
Cancer Association
(ICA) Michigan branch
and Hanoar Chapter held
their 11th annual dinner
dance on Nov. 25 at Cong.
Beth Achim with guest
speaker Suzy Eban .
Mrs. Eban, wife of former
Israeli ambassador to the
United States Abba Eban,
is the international presi-
dent of this voluntary organ-
ization that raises funds for
hospitals and clinics
throughout Israel to fight
cancer.
Over 200 patrons attended
the event, according to ICA
Michigan branch president
Agi Rubin. "We are hoping
for the response of the gen-
eral Jewish community,"
said Mrs. Rubin. She said
the local group of 250 mem-
bers is still considered
small after 11 years.
Mrs. Eban informed the
audience of ICA's achiev-
ements, including the
gamma camera that will be
purchased with funds raised
in Michigan. "There isn't a
single oncology department
in Israel that hasn't been
helped by our association."
She also mentioned how the
organization gives annual
grants to young researchers.
Rob Roth, past president
of Congregation B'nai
Moshe, was the master of
ceremonies for the evening.
"I really didn't want the
job," Mrs. Rubin said, "and
Rob is a good speaker."
Some of the ICA sup-
porters include: Faye and
Sam Rosemberg, Irving
and Barbara Nusbaum,
Trudy and Arthur Weiss,
Blanche Rose, Shirlee and
Jack Iden, Mike and Leila

Eidelman, Harvey and
Diane Zameck, Susie and
David Harold, Yehiella
and Jacob Kalo.

FURMAN SPEECH
The business and profes-

the 1991 Allied Jewish
Campaign held a dinner and
conversation with former
Soviet refusenik Marina
Furman at the home of Lin-
da Powers on Nov. 28.
Larry Jackier, Allied
Jewish Campaign co-
chairman, met with Marina

Linda Powers and Marina Furman

Furman and her husband
Lev in their Leningrad
apartment in 1980. "To be
Jewish is to believe in
miracles," said Mr. Jackier,
referring to the Furmans'
experiences and the exodus
of Soviet Jews to Israel.
Mrs. Furman spoke about
the poverty, anti-Semitism
and persecution she en-
countered in the Soviet
Union. Her story has been
sold to Hollywood and will
be written in a book. "You
have to fight to be free," said
Mrs. Furman, who almost
died in her struggle. She is
now an Israeli resident and
