Local Artist

In D.C. Opening

Gila Gelfond, visual artist
of Beverly Hills, is one of fifty-
one artists featured in "Art
Across America," the opening
exhibition of the Very Special
Arts Gallery in Washington,
D.C. Ms. Gelfond and her
parents will represent
Michigan's state association
at the opening Dec. 3. The ex-
hibit will be open to the
public Dec. 3-March 31.
Ms. Gelfond, a young
woman with a developmental
disability, was involved in a
car accident in 1977. To speed
her recovery, she began pain-
ting and now works with
acrylics and oils in the
primitive style and also pro-
duces wood sculpture. Ms.
Gelfond will be exhibiting
two of her original acrylic
paintings created at the Jim-
my Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center. For the
past three years, she has liv-
ed at the Samuels Haverim
Home, one of eleven
residences funded by JARC, a
non-profit, non-sectarian
group serving developmental-
ly disabled adults in the
Southeast Michigan area.
Very Special Arts
Michigan, an educational af-
filiate of the John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing
Arts and the international
Very Special Arts program
founded in 1974 by Jean Ken-
nedy Smith, increases art ex-
periences for individuals with
disabilities. The program is
affiliated with fifty-four coun-
tries and provides oppor-
tunities in dance, drama,
literary and visual arts, and
music for more than one
million individuals in the
United States.
The Gallery was created as
a non-profit avenue for the
public to support emerging
and recognized professional
artists, and will offer art for
sale in all price ranges in ad-
dition to selected educational
exhibits. Proceeds will benefit
the national and interna-
tional programs of Very
Special Arts.
