PRE-HOLIDAY WEEKEND SKI PACKAGE
& THE EXCEPTIONAL MIDWEEK SPECIAL

members marry and start
families. "Within the last six
weeks, we've had six
engagements. And the ratio
here is six men to every one
woman."
Because their congregation
is in a city with numerous
visitors, Kesher Israel
members maintain a very ac-
tive hospitality committee.
"People call us from England,
from California — you name
it," says Ms. Frank. "If they're
in Washington for a meeting
or conference and they're
observant, they call us."
Sometimes the hospitality
committee members welcome
prominent visiting Jews not
only to their synagogue but to
their homes. Ruth Frank and
her - husband once hosted
Moshe Aumann, the Consul
General of the Israel Em-
bassy, who stayed overnight.
Member Phil Levy
remembers seeing Chaim
Weitzmann and Moshe Dayan
at Kesher Israel one Yom Kip-
pur during the Camp David
negotiations. Mr. Levy
reminisces about this when
he takes a break from helping
customers select books. He's
owner of the Bridge Street
Bookstore at 2014 Penn-
sylvania Avenue, where he
often welcomes Jewish
customers.
Mr. Levy is from a third-
generation Kesher Israel
family — his grandfather was
a founding member — and he
recalls the days when there
were many Jewish merchants
in Georgetown, like his own
father Samuel, now a realtor,
who had a clothing store on M
Street.
His own store is more re-
cent. He opened it 10 years
ago, and he's still stocking it
heavily with books of Jewish
interest: books about politics,
literature, history, philosophy,
and about Jews in film. The
latter is partly the influence
of his brother David Levy,
owner of the Key Theater on
Wisconsin avenue, who has
hosted several Jewish film
festivals in Georgetown.
Two bookcases in Mr. Levy's
store are crammed full of
books of Jewish interest —
about 400 in all — and he
estimates that one-third of his
customers are Jewish.
Like other Georgetowners,
Mr. Levy can reminisce easi-
ly about growing up among
politically prominent
neighbors. His father can
remember seeing Jackie Ken-
nedy wheeling Caroline in a
baby carriage, he says. And
his brother Richard lives in
one of the houses on P Street
where Jack Kennedy lived as
a bachelor.
Mr. Levy can name-drop as
easily as any native. ❑
