backlash to Mr. Milken's
seeking publicity for his char-
itable work. In the Los
Angeles Times and Newsday,
the day after his sentencing,
Allen Sloan, a friend of Mr.
Milken's, wrote:
"Milken has lost almost
everything that he holds dear.
He used to pride himself on
being a quiet donor of huge
amounts to charity and of
working, unheralded, with
disadvantaged children. But
he decided to let his public
relations people turn charity
into a PR show."
No Jewish leader has spo-
ken publicly on the subject of
Mr. Milken, except to express
sorrow for his family and sur-
prise at the severity of his
sentence. Hanging over the
community's head is the fear
of a backlash against Jews,
not only because of Mr. Mil-
ken but because many of the
names involved in the Wall
Street scandals are Jewish. If
the recession turns into a
depression and the savings
and loan scandal is linked in
the public's mind with the
junk bond fiasco that Mr. Mil-
ken was largely responsible
for, the repercussions might
be serious.
It was this subject that a
local Jewish educator, Deb-
orah Lipstadt, addressed
when she spoke earlier this
month at the General Assem-
bly of the Council of Jewish
Federations in San Francisco.
Dr. Lipstadt asked her au-
dience, which included
Jewish leaders from all over
the United States, how they
reacted to such news about
prominent Jews, if it was out
of fear for what the gentiles
may think, or fear of what
their children and grand-
children may think. She sug-
gested that it is probably the
former whereas it should be
the latter. In Los Angeles to-
day, the reaction is probably
the former but the big losers
are the latter. 0

Foreign Aid Bill
Washington (JTA) — Pres-
ident Bush has signed the
1991 foreign aid bill, which
contains $3 billion in all-
grant aid for Israel and
forgives Egypt's $6.7 billion
debt to the United States.
"I am especially pleased
that the Congress has recog-
nized the critical importance
of the issue of Egypt's
military debt," Mr. Bush
said last week.
Mr. Bush has also signed
the 1991 defense appropria-
tions bill.
