eth Hoffman says he
won't be caught napp-
ing anymore.
"I was up 5-2 in the second
set and I sort of dozed off,"
said Hoffman of his Nov. 25
battle in Boston for the boys'
national 16-and-under in-
door tennis championship.
The muscular, 6-foot-5,
205-pound Jim Thomas "got
some confidence and started
coming back with big serves
and volleys" against the 6-1,
175 -pound Hoffman.
Thomas' comeback woke up
the North Farmington High.
School tennis star, but not
early enough to keep Thomas
from winning the second set
7-6 after Hoffman had hand-
ily won the first, 6-2.
However, height, weight
and the second set were all
the West Bloomfield resi-
dent would give up that day:
he reverted to form and took
the third set by the same 6-2
margin to win his first na-
tional net title.
"I learned you've got to
keep the pressure on," said
Hoffman, whose major
championship before the na-
tional title had been via a
6-2, 6-2 victory over Thomas
for the Franklin indoor junior
championship a year ago at
Franklin Racquet Club.
In between the western
and the national, Thomas,
from Canton, Ohio, had
defeated Hoffman 6-4, 5-7,
7-5 for the Western Indoor ti-
tle at Monroe, Mi.
"The big difference bet-
ween Monroe and Boston
was my composure on the
court," said Hoffman. "I just
didn't get upset on the points
I lost" in Boston. "I just
stood back farther on the
court to handle his serves
and volleys."
The national champion-
ship is part of the steady
progress Hoffman has made
on the tennis courts. At age
12, he was ranked No. 10 in
the United States and by the
time he was 14, he was
ranked sixth. He was a
runner-up in the 14-and-
under tourney in Chicago
and has competed in only
five such tourneys to date.
A high school sophomore
who already is hearing from
tennis coaches at colleges
and universities in Min-
nesota, North Carolina and
the Chicago area (Nor-
thwestern and DePaul uni-
versities), Hoffman said he

hasn't decided whether he
will defend the boys' 16 title
next year or go after the
boys' 18 crown. "It depends
on how hard the competition
is," he said.
He may get an inkling in
January when Franklin
again hosts the western re-
gional. "I think I'm going to
play the 18's there," said
Hoffman.
And how did the new na-
tional champ celebrate his
title? By hurrying back to
Southfield the next day to
cheer hitting partner Kori
Davidson of Farmington
Hills on to winning the girls'
national 16-and-under in-
door crown at Franklin.

JCC Varsity Five
Posts 3-0 Sweep

The Jewish Community
Center's Varsity basketball
team scored its first season-
opening sweep in 10 years by
winning all three games
against host Dayton, Ohio,
JCC last weekend.
The troops of Barry Ber-
shad, now in his 26th year as
volunteer head coach, posted
two victories Saturday night,
then nailed down the series
sweep with a 40-38 triumph
Sunday morning.
Brian Silverman with 17
points and 10 rebounds and
Joel Hurshe with 11 points
were the scoring leaders in
Saturday night's 53-52 win,
which saw Detroit hold off
Dayton with a late-game
stall.
The pair also led Sunday's
finale, in which Dayton clos-
ed to two points on a three-
point field goal with two
seconds left. Silverman
tallied 14 markers, Hurshe
10.
