wicked thing?" She coaxed
Joseph day after day. Still, he
did not yield to her seduc-
tions. The way in which
Potiphar's wife found her
revenge is dramatic.
Feeling humiliated by
Joseph's rejection, she grabb-
ed onto Joseph's coat as he
fled from her presence and us-
ed it as evidence against him,
accusing Joseph of commit-
ting the acts she had wanted
him to perpetrate. When her
husband came home and she
presented him with the gar-
ment Joseph had worn, his
jealous instincts and sense of
outrage caused Potiphar to
throw Joseph into prison.
The picture of Joseph
resisting Potiphar's wife is far
different from that of the boy
back in his father's home. The
bravado and braggadocio that
alienated his brothers has
now changed. Joseph has
grown up. He is now the in-
strument of God's providence.
"The Lord was with Joseph."
This is the key to the develop-
ing drama of the Joseph saga,
even when Joseph was temp-
ted in trouble. ❑
