UAHC Endorses
Use Of Force
New York (JTA) — The
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, the central
body of Reform Judaism and
a former opponent of U.S.
intervention in the Vietnam
War, called the use of
military force against Iraq
an "acceptable moral op-
tion."
With this statement, the
UAHC became one of the
first liberal Jewish groups to
emphasize the general fear
in the larger Jewish com-
munity that an unchecked
Iraqi military could
dangerously threaten
Israel's survival.
The UAHC statement
follows the position formally
taken last month by the
Council of Jewish Federa-
tions, an organization of 200
groups, in which support
was given to Mr. Bush's ac-
tions.
In its statement, the
UAHC also rejected attemp-
ts by Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein and others
to link resolution with the
Gulf crisis to the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict.
"This issue neither caused
the Persian Gulf crisis nor
can its resolution solve it,"
said the statement released
Monday.
"We regard the use of
military force as an accep-
table response by the United
States and other nations,"
said the statement, which
also urged President Bush to
explore non- military options
toward resolving the crisis.
The UAHC resolution,
adopted during the organ-
ization's semi- annual
meeting this weekend, rec-
ognized "that when all such
means have been considered
and explored, the use of
military force is an accep-
table moral option to ac-
complish the restoration of
Kuwaiti independence,
freedom for the hostages, the
elimination of Iraqi
biological, chemical and
nuclear capabilities and the
diminishment of Iraq's
offensive military capacity."
However, the UAHC • did
tacitly call on President
Bush to get a declaration of
war from the Congress
before moving ahead. Mr.
Bush has indicated that
complying with the con-
troversial constitutional law
requiring Congress' support
before declaring war is not
one of his priorities. The
UAHC represents 840
Reform synagogues in the
United States and Canada.
