2 Thanksgiving Events
Draw Big Singles Crowds
RICHARD PEARL
Staff Writer
T
he grocery stores
weren't the only
places with long lines
over the recent Thanksgiv-
ing holiday.
And metro Detroit Jewish
singles events organizers
couldn't be happier.
"They were lined up
around the corner," said
Jamie Rabinowitz, the West
Bloomfield mother of two
college students who
organized a holiday reunion
for the 21-to-30-something
set Nov. 22 at Metropolitan
Musicafe in Royal Oak. The
9 p.m. to 2 a.m. event, en-
dorsed by several Reform
temples and Conservative
synagogues, drew nearly
600, with some waiting to
get in at 1 a.m., she said.
"The manager told me it
was like their wildest,
busiest Friday night," said
Mrs. Rabinowitz. "I had
parents calling me the next
day saying they would pay to
have a similar event for
their young people on New
Year's Eve, but it's too late
to plan one now."
The line also was long late
into the night outside Carlos
Murphy's in Southfield,
where approximately 500
Jewish singles showed up for
a social gathering co-
sponsored by several Jewish
organizations, including The
Jewish News.
Scott Mittleman of the co-
ordinating Jewish Welfare
Federation said this first-
ever pre-Thanksgiving event
by the Federation's Young
Adult Division (YAD) in-
cluded "about 30-40 percent
college-age people." YAD
membership includes both
singles and marrieds from
their 20s to early 40s.
Mittleman said there was
a line of people waiting to
get in when he left the
nightspot around midnight.
Other sponsoring organ-
izations were the Jewish
Community Center's Com-
munity Network for Jewish
Singles and the Hillels on
metro Detroit campuses and
at the University of Mich-
igan and Michigan State
University.
A third holiday weekend
event, a coffeehouse for 18-
to-21-year-olds Nov. 24 at
Temple Israel, didn't have
the same numbers, but didn't
lack for enthusiasm, said Dr.
Nancy Gad-Harf, the event co-
ordinator.
She said the coffeehouse,
which featured singing by
Rabbis Paul Yedwab and
Norman Roman and a col-
legiate group, drew about 60
people. "We were very
happy to get that many on a
Saturday night," said Dr.
Gad-Harf, adding, "They
were all so excited to see one
another."
Mrs. Rabinowitz said the
crowd at the Metro
Musicafe, which was closed
to the general public for the
night, was mostly a 21-to-26-
year-old group that danced
and reminisced and didn't
start breaking up until
about 1:15 a.m.
She and the other parents
who put the event together
are considering a similar
event next June.
"I kept hearing these
young people say, 'It's good
to walk into a place and see
so many faces I recognize,' "
Mrs. Rabinowitz said.
But the ultimate compli-
ment, she said, came from
her own daughter, a 21-year-
old senior at the University
of Wisconsin. "It was cool,
Mom," said Elysa.
