as the Midwest chairman, giving him a

BACKGROUND: Peter Schoenbach grew
up in Philadelphia. His father was a
bassoonist in the Philadelphia
Orchestra and taught at Curtis
Institute of Music while his mother was
an artist.
Mr. Schoenbach recalls that his
father used reverse psychology and told
him not to study the bassoon. He
started piano lessons at age 5 and took
drum lessons at age 12. When he was
15-years-old, he decided to play the
bassoon with his father's approval only
if he intended to be a serious student.
"Within a year I was playing in
area orchestras and in two years I was
at Tanglewood. I had such enthusiasm
and energy for it, and of course, I had a
very good idea of what it was supposed
to sound like since I'd been hearing it
all my life," said Mr. Shoenbach.
Upon entering the university, he
never considered a professional career in
music although he continued playing
and studying the bassoon. He enjoyed
studying international diplomacy and
received his master's degree in Spanish
and Latin American studies. He
continued to study Romance languages
and wrote his doctoral dissertation on
Brazilian theater while living in Brazil.
He began teaching Romance
languages at Temple University and
then at the University of Minnesota. In
1973 he accepted the position as dean of
the Curtis Institute of Music. "I have
stayed in music as an administrator for
the last 17 years, and I have never
looked back."
Mr. Schoenbach believes all arts and
culture are inter-related and is looking
forward to a sabbatical in Portugal
beginning in January. Among his many
publications on music and Latin
American culture are Prokofiev: A
Composer's Memoir, co-edited with
David Appel for Doubleday and
Classical Music of Brazil, a study guide
and annotated bibliography.
He is looking forward to his next
interesting project, Brundibar, a
children's opera presented by the
Holocaust Memorial Center. There will
be performances the weekend of Dec. 14
at Wayne State University and Temple
Israel.
"There is nothing I would rather do
than be involved in education, at any
level," he said. fl
