the U.S. government to allow
more Russian Jews to enter
the United States.
There are two things the
Russians need: housing and
jobs. Yet these are the very
items Israel is not providing.
Despite all the Zionist
rhetoric and all the fund-
raising missions to the U.S.,
bureaucracy, unpreparedness,
political infighting and confu-
sion still run rampant
amongst the ministries
responsible for the olim.
The Russian Jews are a
talented and dynamic people
and will enrich any society
that absorbs them. Because of
our incompetent and feckless
government, Israel is missing
an historic opportunity to
strengthen itself. So as not to
waste their talents, and to
save them from personal
tragedy, it is imperative that
America open its gates to
these Jews. Israel's loss will
be U.S. Jewry's and America's
gain.

My sincere thanks to Mr.
Phil Jacobs for his article
"Too Poor to Beg" in The
Jewish News Nov. 16. At last
a very important problem has
come to the attention of our
community.
for
volunteers
As
Jewish Vocational Service
(and there should be many
more) Zvi and Gertie Golan-
bursky, Robert Singer and I
visit nursing and adult foster
care homes on East Grand
Boulevard, King Street,
Woodward Avenue and
Virginia Park, bringing
goodies, a good word and ask-
ing about their needs. We also
visit Livonia Nursing Home
every other Friday, make Sab-
bath services, light Sabbath
candles and try to help the
patients remember their
background and tradition.
The Cooperative Council of
the League of Jewish Women,
with the cooperation of Rab-
bi and Mrs. Solomon Gruskin,
have since 1964 been making
Chanukah and seder parties
for the majority of our people
from the inner city, hospitals
and from wherever they may
be.
As a volunteer and human
being, I am very upset that
our people cannot be placed
where they will be part of our
community and more could
be done for them. When we
tell friends we go to the inner
city, they are surprised. We
feel God will help us.
Mr. Jacobs, thanks again.

He Never Saw
The Real Israel

I would like to differ with
Mr. Marc Baker (Nov. 30) who
aspired to be an Israeli soldier
and now doesn't donate to
Israel because he feels Israel
is a welfare state.
I didn't aspire; I was a
soldier and have several
years' reserve duty behind me
and I thank every Jew that
donated charity to Israel.
When I was on patrol and not
earning an income compati-
ble to my losses for the
month, I was grateful that
socialized medicine was
available. My friends felt the
same way.
Unlike Mr. Baker I did not
have a government job. I did
not study art history. I work-
ed eight and nine hours a day.
I had after-hours guard duty.
.I advise that on his next
trip, if any, maybe he should
look into the private sector for
employment and enter into
the real Israel.
I am sorry that his dreams
were shattered and he had to
return to his West Bloomfield
home but possibly his stan-
dards of income were set too
high and not down to where
the average Israeli income
lies.
He never lived in Israel. He
lived in a dream.

Detroit Ties
To 'Yellow Door'

"The Yellow Door to
Paradise" (Nov. 30) was very
interesting, and I hope it will
inspire many people to visit
Israel.
In the article, Elizabeth Ap-
plebaum mentioned a new ex-
hibit at the Israel Museum, a
sukkah from Fischach, Ger-
many. The sukkah was
donted by the family Deller,
in memory of Abraham
Deller. Abraham Deller was
the brother of Ida Deller
Buehler, my grandmother.
The sukkah was built in 1925
by an ancestor of the Deller
family.
The sukkah is designed
with different painted scenes;
the first house in the street
scene is the Deller house, and
the last building on the left
side was the village
synagogue. The sukkah was
taken apart and smuggled
out of Nazi Germany in 1938
and taken to Israel.
When my children and
sabra grandchildren go to the
museum, they always say
they go to see our sukkah.
