CHICKEN SOUP
WITH KNAIDLACH
11/2 cups canned chicken
broth
1 /4 medium carrot, thinly
sliced
Knaidlach:
1 egg
1 rounded tablespoon
soft margarine
pinch salt, pepper and
nutmeg
about V2 cup matzo meal
boiling water
Place broth and carrot in
saucepan, cover and bring to
simmer. Cook for 10 minutes
or so until knaidlach are Q
ready. To make knaidlach: In
small bowl, beat egg and
margarine with a fork. It
won't combine but will break
up. Stir in salt, pepper and
nutmeg, and enough matzo
meal to make a stiff mixture.
Roll into balls about 1-inch in
diameter. Drop into a pot of
boiling water and simmer for
7 to 8 minutes. Test by cutting
through one — it should be
dry in center. Remove with
slotted spoon and place in
soup bowl. Pour hot broth
over. Makes 3 to 4 knaidlach.

Masada, the National
Youth Movement of the
Z.O.A., sponsored a national
writing and photo competi-
tion for those high school and
college students who spent
last summer in Israel with
the organization. The theme
of the competition was that
Israel experience.
Second prize in each of the
competitions was awarded to
Andover High School seniors,
Marla Simmer and David
Ehrlich. Marla placed second
in the writing competition for
her essay entitled "Israel: My
Past, My Present, and My
Future." David's photo of a
sunrise in the desert below
Masada was judged second
best in that contest.
