FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1990

every believer into the army
of Mohammed's god.
In a Jihad, the Moslem ho-
ly war, the murder of the in-
fidel is a sacrament, the van-
quished are to be shown no
mercy, and the sacrifice of
one's life guarantees entrance
to heaven.
Making peace with Israel is
an act of heresy for a Moslem.
The Islamic nations of the
Middle East read the Koran's
call to arms literally, and for
us to do otherwise requires
the most outrageous ra-
tionalizations and convoluted
logic. Peace cannot be pur-
chased by territorial com-
promises to Moslem cru-
saders indoctrinated to settle
only for conversion or death.
The reactionary politics of
Rabbi Kahane also fail to
solve the problem of Islamic
anti-Semitic dogma while ad-
ding to the problem by an-
tagonizing secular and Chris-
tian Arabs. Rooting out anti-
Semitism is a worthwhile
goal, but it is necessary to
muster the strength to stand
up to it and to understand it
before you can challenge it.

Failed Its Job

The American Jewish Com-
mittee commends the ad-
ministration and the athletic
department of the University
of Michigan-Dearborn for
placing sport above politics.
To invite an Israeli basketball
team to the school
demonstrated a belief that a
university must be an open
forum where no one,
regardless of race, creed, or
national origin, should fear to
speak, perform or play. Fur-
ther, the University of
Michigan-Dearborn showed
an equal commitment to the
principles of free speech and
assembly.
However, these ideals clash-
ed on the basketball court
Nov. 26, and the university,
from our perspective, came up
lacking. The reason for this is
clear. University officials for-
got that no freedom is total-
ly unrestricted, including the
right of free speech. For exam-
ple, we are all familiar with
Justice Holmes' comment
about yelling "fire" in a
crowded theater.
When student protest ex-
tends to disturbing a univer-
sity event, the protestors have
gone beyond acceptable
limits. The protestors should
have been asked to leave the
arena floor and, if they refus-
ed, they ought to have been
ejected.
Absent guidelines for stu-
dent protest and the articula-

tion by the university ad-
ministration of acceptable as
well as unacceptable
behavior, the unfortunate
events which occurred Nov. 26
will be repeated again and
again. It is an issue of the
resolve on the part of the
University of Michigan-
Dearborn to curb excesses,
while creating the environ-
ment that allows Israeli
athletes to participate freely
in a basketball game and
those opposed to the policies
of the Israeli government to
have their views heard.

Free Speech
And Democracy

As a graduate of the
University of Michigan, I am
ashamed of the behavior of a
group of pro-Palestinian
demonstrators against the
visiting Israeli basketball
team at U of M Dearborn,
causing the team to walk off
the court.
It reminds me of the time
when I attended U of M and
these same groups would in-
terrupt a speaker they
targeted as being disagree-
able to their cause, shouting
and harassing the speaker
with the intent of denying the
opportunity for those who at-
tended to listen to the
speaker they came to hear.
This outrageous behavior is
not the exercise of free speech,
rather it is harassment and
incitement, neither protected
by the first amendment.
Perhaps these same
demonstrators would do bet-
ter to learn the American
values of respect for others,
especially guests, and display
less of the behavior of the
brutal and oppressive
regimes they admire: Iraq,
Iran, Syria, Yemen, Libya,
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jor-
dan and the various terrorist
Palestinian factions, none of
which are democracies, all of
which kill or jail en masse
those that disagree with
them.
As a member of the U of M
"family," I apologize for their
behavior.
