Framing Art
For presentation and protection,
custom framing is essential for the en-
joyment of art on paper. The framing
experts at The Greenwich Workshop,
a leading publisher of signed and
numbered limited edition prints, of-
fer these suggestions when having
paper-borne art framed:
Framing is actually composed of
layers — much like a sandwich. The
most visible "layer" on the outside
is the moulding. There are thousands
of mouldings available in every size,
design, finish and color.
Beneath the moulding is the mat-
ting — usually two or three mats in
colors to complement the colors in
the picture Only acid-neutral board
mats should touch the paper, thus
assuring that no acid will reach from
the board to the print and thus
discolor it. Acid-free mats are
available in a number of materials, in-
cluding linen and suede.
The glass that covers the art pro-
tects it from dust, dirt and acciden-
tal contact. In addition, glass that
filters out most of the sun's harmful
ultraviolet rays is now available. In
either case, however, it's best not to
hang art where it will be exposed to
direct sunlight.
There are two other "framing
don'ts": One, never allow the framer
to cut, trim or otherwise alter the
print because this destroys its collec-
tor value. rBA/o, be sure the print isn't
glued or taped in place. Acid-free
hinges or corner mounts should be
used, or the print can be held in place
by inserting its corners into diagonal
cuts.
