tinians," he said. "I am
somewhat sympathetic that
the Palestinians have an en-
tity where they are controll-
ing their own lives. I think it
is important for Israelis and
Palestinians to gain a cer-
tain amount of recognition of
everyone else's humanity."
Mr. Varga said he favored
a two-state solution if, for
nothing else, the current
situation Israel finds itself
in is a threat to the security
of the Jewish state.
"I feel strongly for the
need for a Jewish state," he
said, "but I also feel strongly
that the Jewish state not be
in control of other people's
lives."
The San Francisco Mime
Troupe for 27 years has been
heralded for its onstage look
at world and domestic
politics. Over the years,
however, the troupe has
stayed away from the Middle
East issue because it didn't
want to offend its audiences.
Ms. Shihadeh said that after
PLO Chairman Yassir
Arafat officially recognized
Israel's right to exist, and
after the intifida reached
full force, the Middle East
issue became more plausible

Sinai Peter conceived the
plot.

didn't understand what she
called the "pain" of the Pa-
lestinians. She also said the
Arab writers didn't know
what it was like to live as a
Jew in a post-World War II
world that "was still full of
anti-Semitism" and
"reminders of the Holo-
caust."
The Palestinian writer
went on to say that as
critical as she is about
Israel, Palestinians need to
try to do a better job of mak-
ing Israelis and American
Jews see that every Arab is
not a terrorist. She also said
Palestinians need to im-
prove when it comes to
casting Jews as the enemy.

"We haven't helped
ourselves all of the time,"
she said. "In fact, we've hurt
ourselves in the world's
spotlight. Both sides need to
improve themselves, and I
think the play points this
out."
Mr. Varga agreed, saying
the Palestinians are often
their own worst enemies,
"shooting themselves in the
foot" with terrorist actions
