The Gingerbread Castle in
the main lobby of Hyatt
Regency Dearborn is the
world's largest, measuring 36
feet by 16 feet and standing
14 feet high.
The "Tastes of Royal Oak"
is this Sunday, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. in
the Oakland Community Col-
lege atrium, Royal Oak cam-
pus . . . It's the second annual
with restaurants including Le
Panto, Les Auteurs, Oxford
Inn, Malibu, Cuisine Cour-
iers, Peking House, Pas-
quale's, Metropolitan Music
Cafe, Oliverio's and Inn
Season . . . The fund raising
"Taste" helps the Sanctuary,
a private, licensed shelter and
counseling program for the
homeless and runaway youth
of Oakland County plus the
Oakland Community College
Culinary Arts Scholarship
Program.
Where They Are . . . Maury
and Freda Bindes . . . Lincoln
3045-C, Boca Raton, Fla.
33434 . . . Left Detroit over 10
years ago . . . and recently
celebrated their 49th anniver-
sary . . . Maury is 81.
When out-of-towners talk
about the food or chefs in
their town, here's a fact that
will quiet them mighty quick
. . . During the 1984 World
Culinary Salon, the culinary
competition equivalent to the
Olympics held every four
years in Frankfurt, Germany,
Michigan received more gold
medals than any other state
. . . taking home five golds out
of the 27 won by the U.S. . . .
Of those gold medals, two
were "with distinction,"
meaning the chefs received a
perfect score . . .There were
only six gold medals with
distinction awarded world-
wide . . . Also, Chef Michael
Russell of the Skyline Club
here in Southfield will be cap-
tain of the 1992 team.
Kroger at Crosswinds Mall
is the first to have the highly-
touted kosher Turf Cheescake
out of New York . . . The Turf
restaurant on Broadway at
49th Street in Manhattan, a
landmark, closed its doors for
the last time in the late
1950s, but its most famous
product . . . cheesecake . . .
wasn't allowed to die with it
. . . The world-renowned
restaurant's manager, Frank
Hoffman, believed so many
people know of . . . and loved
. . . the Turf's cheescake that
it could be sold as a product
on its own . . . He was right
. . . Today, Turf Cheesecake is
one of the most widely sold
brands across the United
States and Canada . . . Hoff-
man's two sons, Richard and
Peter, are charging ahead like
Count Turf once did to win
the Kentucky Derby back in
1951 . . . The horse, like the

cheesecake, was named after
the restaurant.
Coco's Dept. . . . "Wagging
and telling tails around the
fire hydrant, one of my friends
told about the dog who follow-
ed a 5-year-old girl home. She
didn't know that her new
friend was a female. She lov-
ed the dog so that her parents
couldn't find it in her hearts
to call the Humane Society.
The little girl had her mo-
ment of triumph some weeks
later when she came home
from school and found her dog
being pursued by every male
dog in the neighborhood.
"How do you like that,
Mom?" she said proudly.
"Our dog is just a natural-
born leader?'
Hotel Radisson Plaza's Ex-
ecutive Chef Judy Danielson
has joined the health parade
in a big way . . . She recently
attended a 10-day health-
cooking seminar taught by
master chefs from Hyde Park,
N.Y. Culinary Institute of
America with recipes
developed there . . . Judy's
new light cuisine is featured
at the Bouquet's Spa brunch
where the menu provides
complete nutritional informa-
tion, including calories, fat,
cholesterol, sodium, car-
bohydrates and protein
content.
Opera Night continues
every Wednesday at
DePalmas on Plymouth west
of Merriman . . . Dancing at
Mario's on Second and at Ex-
calibur on Franklin is Mon-
day through Saturday . . . Bil-
ly Rose is Monday evenings at
Excalibur . . . It's official .. .
there will definitely be danc-
ing at Dimitri's of Southfield.
Don't wait until the last
minute . . . start making your
New Year's Eve plans . . .
Almost all niteries and hotels
have their packages together
. . . You can pick and choose
now . . . By waiting, you may
have to take the leftovers.
Video Critique . . . by Mike
Dembs . . . Crazy People .. .
"This is called taking a fun-
ny premise (truthful advertis-
ing) and going nowhere with
it. Dudley Moore is a half-
baked ad exec who creates
some very funny ads, albeit
by using foul language and
being very crude. He is abet-
ted by the lunatics of a
sanitarium he's currently
residing at. Darryl Hannah is
the love interest. Why is she
even in this movie? It makes
no sense and neither does her
performance. Some of the ads
are hysterical but the other
90 minutes of the movie are
far from it."
Get Well Wishes . . . to Jack
Glick . . . Broke his hip while
jitterbugging . . . Jack is
73.
