become integrated into socie-
ty, he says, "they too will
become valuable assets to our
community. And she's cer-
tainly a good example. If it
can happen to Zina and her
family, it can happen for other
families."
Mrs. Shaykhet will teach a
free, Temple-sponsored course
in either Russian or English
about Jewish holidays and
worship skills. "We're aiming
at the people who have been
here in the country for 10 or
12 years, (people) who were
first very concerned with
making a living and putting
their kids through school."
It's often difficult to con-
vince her compatriots to take
advantage of the help offered
to them, she says. "Unfor-
tunately some people are a li-
tie bashful to come out and
take a class. Because in
Russia there is no adult
education. People get their
degrees while they're young.
They feel strange. You have to
explain to them that it's
enriching and that American
Jews always take classes,
always learn something new.
"We're not trying to buy
their attention . . . And if
they take a class here and
then they want to join any
other synagogue, that's fine
. . . we want to introduce
them to Reform Judaism,
that's our goal." 0

tion and Performing Arts of
the Detroit Institute of Arts
will present a program of two
lectures on the films of
Danish director Carl TH.
Dreyer 2:30 p.m. Dec. 2 in the
lecture hall of the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts. Known for his
silent film, The Passion of
Joan of Arc, Mr. Dreyer is

bine narrative realism with
experimental methods of film
construction.
Jytte Jensen, assistant
curator of the director's silent
films, up to and including The
Passion of Joan of Arc, and
their relationship to the ear-
ly Scandinavian film
industry.
Critic and author P. Adams
Sitney will deal with the

(Day of Wrath, Ordet and Ger-
trud) and with Mr. Dreyer's
plans for a film on the life of
Jesus and an adaptation of
Euriphides' Medea, both pro-
